I-64 construction east of Kingshighway will commence after the Grand Blvd bridge is done. Jefferson, Tower Grove, Boyle, Taylor and Newstead will get new bridges and a new interchange at Boyle/Tower Grove.

Alex, I think you posted some info on the new interchange in the past. Do I understand correctly that BJC was a partnering with MoDOT, in terms of providing some additional funding, for the interchange? Did it include any money towards improving pedestarian access on the bridge replacements. It would be nice to see some of the proposed housing in FPSE happen, proposed Drury Inn and new Shriners Hospital inconjunction with this work.

Yes, BJC is paying a few million $ to cover a good part of the new interchange. I'd be surprised if the bridge get any special treatment. The neighborhood will be lucky to get the standard New I-64 treatment. As you note, that's a shame. If they could just make the pedestrian crossings wider and more attractive, it would be great for FPSE.

I'd really like to see some signature entrance to the neighborhood/BJC campus on the Taylor bridge. I think of it as one of the major entry points to the Grove, especially for people coming from the CWE, and right now it's pretty unattractive by both car and foot.

MoDOT to start major project on I-64 double deck downtown
http://www.modot.org/stlouis/news_and_i ... sId=164999

ST. LOUIS – The Missouri Department of Transportation has begun work on a major project on the I-64 double deck structure in downtown St. Louis that will have major impacts on traffic until the end of the year.
The project will require permanent lane closures on the bridge and several weekend interstate closures throughout 2012, including a closure of westbound I-64 this weekend, starting at 8:30 p.m. Friday, April 27. The interstate will reopen by 9 a.m. Sunday, April 29. This work is weather permitting. The department will open one lane of westbound I-64 on Saturday, April 28 at 10 a.m. to allow for baseball traffic to enter into downtown.
In addition, the ramp from Broadway to westbound I-64 closes April 27 until October. Drivers can use the 10th Street and 14th Street ramps to access I-64 westbound.
One lane will be closed, around the clock, on westbound I-64 from April 29th to late August. During non-peak hours, crews will have two of the three lanes closed. Work on westbound I-64 will require approximately 10 full weekend closures of the westbound interstate to complete.
Work begins on eastbound I-64 in late August and continues through late October. It will also require a full lane closure, around the clock on eastbound I-64. During non-peak hours, crews will have two of the three lanes closed. Work on eastbound I-64 will also require approximately three full interstate closures.
This work is to remove and replace the driving surface on the double deck portion of I-64 and to replace the deteriorated joints.
“The double deck is more than 50 years old, and this is part of the preventative maintenance work needed to extend its useful life another 25 years. Our previous jobs over the last ten years on the double deck were to seismically retrofit the structure. Part of this work required us to cut holes in the deck and add additional steel and re-pour the deck in hundreds of locations. Since, this job is now complete, we need a new driving surface to smooth out the ride for motorists and preserve the deck for the future,” said Deanna Venker, MoDOT Area Engineer for St. Louis City.
“We understand that this is going to be challenging for morning and evening commuters, and for people who attend downtown events at Busch Stadium. We have a very aggressive schedule with our contractor, so we can complete this project as quickly as possible,” she said.

I just noticed this morning that the new Taylor and Newstead bridges over 64/40 are now open... sidewalks are still closed. Tower Grove and Sarah bridges will be up next for replacement. Just part of the amazingly rapid transformation of this area.

Agreed. The new bridges have some aesthetic treatments with oldy-style lamposts may help a bit but it would be nice to have some really thoughtful gateway design. Removing the billboards would also be nice.

I walked across the Taylor bridge on Saturday. Some sections of sidewalk were closed, but I made it unscathed.

Here's the approach to the Newstead bridge with a cameo by Aventura from the WUMCRC twitter feed

If they tear down Aventura and build something nice in its place by spring, then yes. :-\

Sarah actually goes under 64/40, I believe.

I can't wait until this segment is complete. The BIG I-64 project + Jefferson redo + downtown seismic refit + this project has been tough.

The lights on the new Taylor bridge are a great enhancement.

Tower Grove and Boyle bridges are coming down this weekend and new ones should be up by August.... good to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

I also noticed that the new Sarah bridge over the I-64 Vandeventer ramps has some pretty decent aesthetic enhancements.... will be a more welcoming presence as visitors make their way to the Greater IKEA area of Saint Louis. But too bad those ugly old billboards at the foot of Vandeventer (and possible new Trader Joe's per rumor) appear to remain.

This project is a great example of private/public partnership. $18m project, half paid for by MoDOT and the other half by WashU/BJC

chatted with a few of the staff at the Brentwood Joes and they stated that there is NOT going to be a Trader Joes in the midtown area. In fact the lease is up very soon on the Olive location and it will close and a new one open up in the valley. I did not pursue what the valley meant.

Probably meant Chesterfield Valley.

I wish they'd get rid fo the billboards. What an eyesore! Or at least tax them a bunch.

In my opinion, it's honestly pretty maddening and embarrassing that we determined it's okay to shut down our region's primary east-west artery for one of downtown's annually biggest weekends.

Yes, especially for any of them staying in Clayton or Brentwood.

But:
-Last weekend was Soulard Mardi Gras (plus ice/sleet and snow forecast)
-This weekend is MVC
-Next weekend is St. Patty's Parade downtown
-The weekend after that is NCAA Mens Sweet 16 at Scottrade

They should have waited until the last week of the month. There's a Blues game but that hasn't stopped MoDOT before.

Yep, the Blues game weekend would have been far preferable

^ Wonder how he felt when at least 5 miles of I-64/Hwy 40 were shutdown for two years running. Whining publically instead of whining privately only means that more people know that your whining.

You don't think he has a point? It's one of the most important weekends for our downtown, which, if you haven't been paying attention this week, is in serious need of good news and things going for it. Anytime we can host thousands of people from out of state for events we should be rolling out the red carpet, planting flowers everywhere, and try to avoid closing the primary east-west artery of our region as it runs through downtown. He's not whining, he's expressing his embarrassment, and I feel the same way. The closure doubled the length of my commute yesterday evening, and it was infuriating. I hope this doesn't affect the Missouri Valley Conference's relationship with downtown St. Louis in the future.
