Construction schedule is usually up to the contractor, there are 100 of things that are considered before asking to shut down a highway you can't make everyone happy.
Serious question... how many out-of-towners did this likely affect? I'd hope that if they were here for the tournament they stayed downtown or nearby. If you were making a weekend of it, it would seem silly to stay far enough away to need to use 64 unless there just weren't enough available rooms, which I doubt.
Now, if you're a local media member that lives out in the 'burbs and relies on the interstate to get to the action. Welp. Sorry...

I don't think it was a ton; but there are teams where the fans come from the west:jstriebel wrote:Serious question... how many out-of-towners did this likely affect? Wichita State
Drake
University of Northern Iowa
Plus some people want to save money and are willing to stay in the close-by suburbs if it saves them $30 to $50/night. And with the number of Wichita State fans that swarmed the city, things could have been full downtown.
(BTW: I didn't know Creighton had left the MO Valley. Bummer, as they seemed to always bring a lot of fans regardless of the team's status.)
Rawest, yes he has a point and maybe I was quick to jump on what I think was complaining for the sake of complaining. I think Dweebe makes a good point that your going to have a tough time scheduling around events or least that is my take away. Then you get into subjective comments, wouldn't the Sweet 16 garner more national then the MVC? Knowitall brings up construction is driven by contractors. While a lot of that is driven by weather in the region, especially with pavements and concrete. To hot, to cold and you can't pour or place. Finally, wouldn't you drive I70 if you were coming from Wichita State?
As far as downtime, yes downtown took some hits this week but the lack of sporting events is not what is ailing downtown in my opinion. Far from it. Nor is rebuilding or in this case replacing bridges the reason VA is leaving downtown. Nor is a festival or two leaving from one promoter when downtown has had an every expanding presence of festivals. What is ailing downtown is for every resident that decides live downtown the region decides another job should leave downtown. Downtown needs both, residential and return to job growth.

Sound off: What would you do to improve St. Louis?
St. Louis is constantly working to improve its image and draw more visitors. And NewsChannel 5 wants to help.
This weekend, thousands of out-of-towners filled downtown St. Louis for the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. And we were there to ask how visitors think the city can improve.
"The MetroLink. Some of the stops around here are not real convenient," said John Burkett of Terre Haute, Ind.
"There's obviously not enough parking around here," added Dennis Gillen of Wichita, Kan.
Janice Hines and Michael Sherman of Murphysboro, Ill. would like to see abandoned buildings around the city torn down.
"There is so much housing that is burned. The buildings are burned down, windows are busted out," Hines said.
"It's not free. It's going to cost money to take them down. But it would be cheaper probably than trying to renovate it," Sherman said.
Now that we've gotten some good suggestions we're going to take them to local leaders to try to make St Louis a better place to live, work and visit.
But we're not stopping here. We want to know what you think, too. Go to our KSDK Facebook page and leave your comments.
Who knows? Your idea could be the one to create change.

^ Haha, hopefully they are as good at ignoring KSDK as they are at ignoring the suggestion that show up on this site.
So they get the opinions of three people from out of town, and one is that our parking-filled city needs more parking and another is to tear down our historic buildings.
At least one guy got the MetroLink thing.

Oh that wacky local news is up to it again...
Sigh.
Here's a wacky idea KSDK. Stop dumbing down your broadcasts and pandering to the lowest common denominator. There's a little thing out there I like to call research. Maybe use it to do some productive reports and help the community you cover.

If we don't have nearly enough parking to satisfy someone from Wichita I think that means we have way too much!
Thanks for the suggestions Kansas dude! Time to build on these surface lots

Just go to the KSDK Facebook page to see the 500+ comments. Some are dead on and what we say here: others are just plain stupidity.robertn42 wrote:Oh that wacky local news is up to it again...

Looking on Google Maps their arena has parking lots on 3 sides a huge cemetery on the other side.southsidepride wrote:If we don't have nearly enough parking to satisfy someone from Wichita I think that means we have way too much!

If you use Google Maps for directions, they bring you in to downtown via I-64dredger wrote:Finally, wouldn't you drive I70 if you were coming from Wichita State?
The 64 shutdown is such a non-issue, I don't know why anyone is even giving it attention. They shut down a small section of the highway; big deal, plan around it.
No big deal for residents and anyone paying attention. But it's not the best impression on a weekend when there's a ton of out-of-town visitors.flipz wrote:The 64 shutdown is such a non-issue, I don't know why anyone is even giving it attention. Much better they closed last weekend than this as its First Robotics time again... Screw the jocks, let's bring on the robots! Oh, and St. Patty's parade. Anyway, its great to see some big weekends for downtown.
While the prescription is wrong, I understand the sentiment. Our highways leading up to downtown are depressing visually with a boatload of blight from billboards to abandoned buildings. Especially coming in from the airport on I-70, travelers are greeted with a terrible impression of Saint Louis.dweebe wrote:http://www.ksdk.com/story/news/2014/03/ ... l/6238829/

I'll rebuild all of 70 from the airport to downtown getting rid of the un needed express lanes. With 64 i'll get rid of the double deck bridges are a constant money pit i'll give 44 a diet in reducing one lane on both sides but the significant feature i would reach for a goal of making the St.Louis interstate system the most beautiful and creative flowers trees endless gardens bike trails/ racks.. Oh yeah getting rid of the 1-44 downtown and making it a beautiful urban blvd connecting all of downtown with the riverfront ...I would get rid of the BLVD thought and just make it to where its pedestrians only and the new BLVD would be Broadway...

Tower Grove & Boyle bridges and related work open tomorrow.
I've been looking forward to the Tower Grove exit opening. Should ease some of the backups on the Kingshighway exit.
Hopefully this should shift a good portion of the Medical Complex employee traffic to that exit. In addition, maybe some of the traffic that cuts through The Grove on Taylor and Newstead will move to the new exit. It's not uncommon for those streets to back up in the evening from Manchester all the way past Chouteau.bigreid74 wrote:I've been looking forward to the Tower Grove exit opening. WashU/BJC ponied up $9million of the $18M total project cost.dredger wrote:Alex, I think you posted some info on the new interchange in the past. Do I understand correctly that BJC was a partnering with MoDOT, in terms of providing some additional funding, for the interchange? Did it include any money towards improving pedestarian access on the bridge replacements. It would be nice to see some of the proposed housing in FPSE happen, proposed Drury Inn and new Shriners Hospital inconjunction with this work.quincunx wrote:I-64 construction east of Kingshighway will commence after the Grand Blvd bridge is done. Jefferson, Tower Grove, Boyle, Taylor and Newstead will get new bridges and a new interchange at Boyle/Tower Grove.
