1. I'd like to see it reused as a restaurant with a surrounding patio to create a lively streetcorner.

2. I wouldn't mind it being demolished. It stands alone and by itself I don't think it consitutes a resource worth saving at all costs. There are several intact blocks of mansions in the CWE. On Lindell the cat was out of the bag many many years ago. I think the corner may have a higher use.

hmmmm. Apparently I'm in the minority here. I'd really hate to lose that building. But on the upside - at least for me - if the Roberts are the ones who take charge of the demolition, I'll be able to sleep easy knowing that it wont be torn down in my life time.

and lets not forget that this is all angels on pinheads .... no one actually knows what they have planed for the building. Hell maybe they plan to live there. Maybe he wants to go into dentistry ... who knows.

No, I agree with you mark. I actually agree more with someone who said earlier that they should move the house. If the property is so valuable, then why not save the house AND build something new on it. Moving huge buildings is not uncommon either.

Hell, if they can move Keil Opera House to Ballpark Village, they can move this little ol' mansion.

I'm really torn on this one, as I don't want to lose the mansion. However, I think I'm inclined to agree with you about the best and highest use of the corner.

I would rather a big development be built on the parking lot across Euclid from the old mansion, but if there is a high-density proposal for that site, I'm not really going to miss it. They turned the old mansion into a dental office of all things. Talk about ripping the soul out of the place!

For the record, the mansion did once house an incarnation of the City Cousin restaurant (which had formerly been in the basement space down the street on Euclid). My very vague recollection is that it's a difficult space into which to shoehorn a kitchen.

for all the money they have, the Roberts' brothers certainly are slow with their developments...

Anybody have any updates on this project? I parked in front of the Days Inn to attend a neighborhood function last THU evening, and the grass is almost knee-high. Sure wish the Robert's could invest $50.00 a week to have the lawn mown until they start their "renovation". The place will soon look pretty scary.

I am dead set against emminent domain in principle, but if there were ever a case I'd support...How about we just hand over all of their properties to the Gills/Opus/Cassilly/etc?

That'd be more progress than the Roberts' bros have made.

I don't defend them. I present a balanced perspective. Who sat on all of those tore-up-from-the-floor up buildings in downtown and the Central Corridor for years? Surely wasn't them. And they renovated one of the first buildings in the OPO district. I do believe they receive more scrutiny than other city property owners.

Yet, if the grass needs cutting, they should have it cut.

Well maybe you should buy it from them and take care of business.

ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

05/15/2007

BOUTIQUE DEAL: The Roberts Brothers, Michael and Steve, are bringing two boutique hotels to St. Louis, and one will be at the Inn at the Park at 4630 Lindell Boulevard.

The brothers say they will spend $8 million on the Inn at the Park, which was built in 1957 as the Bel Air. When it closed, the hotel had 128 rooms.

Both will be Hotel Indigos, whose parent is InterContinental Hotel Group of Windsor, England.

The other hotel will be located in the St. Louis convention district, and the project will be a mixed-use development with retail, condominiums and the hotel.

Two sites are being considered, one owned by the brothers and one they hope to close on soon.

Roberts Hotels Group Developing Two Indigo Hotels in St. Louis,

a Conversion in the Central West End and a New Build Downtown

ATLANTA (May 15, 2007) – IHG (InterContinental Hotels Group) [LON: IHG, NYSE: IHG (ADRs)], the world’s largest hotel group by number of rooms, announces today plans for two Hotel Indigo developments in St. Louis, Mo.; in the Central West End and downtown. Both properties are being developed by Roberts Hotels Group, and will be managed by Roberts Hotels Management, under a license agreement with a company in the InterContinental Hotels Group.

The Roberts Hotels Group is a subsidiary of the Roberts Companies, owned by Michael and Steven Roberts, two brothers ranked among the country’s most successful African-American businessmen. “St. Louis is ripe for the Indigo Hotel brand,” said Michael Roberts. “It’s the hotel of the future – cool, hip and stylish,” he stated when announcing this venture.

The 120-room property at the east end of Forest Park in the city’s upscale Central West End will be a conversion from the independently owned Inn at the Park and is scheduled to open in October 2007. Renovations on the three-story building, originally built in 1956, will commence this month.

“As the ‘The Gateway to the West’, St. Louis is a vibrant, internationally renowned city with a distinctive culture which makes it popular as both a business and leisure destination,” said Jim Anhut, senior vice president, Brand Development, the Americas, IHG. “We are proud to introduce this exciting branded boutique concept to St. Louis in both the Central West End and downtown communities and we’re thrilled to work with the Roberts Hotels Group on two exciting projects."

The second development is located in the downtown St. Louis convention district. The property will be a mixed-use development with retail, condominiums and the Hotel Indigo. Construction will begin third quarter of 2007 and an opening is planned for spring 2008.

“We look forward to introducing our hometown of St. Louis to the Hotel Indigo brand,” said Steve Roberts. “We know our Hotel Indigo properties will be most appealing to the discriminating travelers who visit St. Louis.”

I wonder what type of conversion this will be if they're to be open in October. I guess this means no new tower, no taking the corner dentist office. I think it could be a great redo - just seems like it should take longer. If they start next month I'll be happy - of course I'd settle for them just cutting the freakin' grass to start with!

As someone who worked in the hotel industry for 15 years, I think this is an interesting choice, not the one I would have made, but interesting none the less. Hotel Indigo is a nice product, but if I were building a 'boutique/chain' (oxymoron?) hotel, I would go all out and build aLoft, which is a Starwood brand based on the W flag. Everything I've seen about this brand (I don't think they have opened any yet) it would be a better fit downtown and it would be easier to drive rate on the rooms than it would in a Hotel Indigo.

Just my opinion.

They're finally starting work on this, or will be within the next couple of days anyway. It's now supposed to be ready by March. Supposedly it's quite the mess in there right now.

Stayed at the Hotel Indigo in Sarasota, FL. While it was comfortable, the location wasn't that great and the service was decent. The rooms however are very welcoming. I would rather see a W hotel open up in the CWE, but this will still be great for the neighborhood.

Loews had it's eye on the current Westin hotel when it was sold but Starwood retained the flag and the hotel will remain a westin. Starwood is adding another Westin hotel by the galleria (brentwood@clayton - due to open mid 2009) but there are currently no plans for a w or an aloft sadly as id love to see W make its entry into st louis. cwe would make the perfect neighborhood for a w.

Agreed. Starwood has no plans for a W in St. Louis, however I think an A Loft is a few years down the road. I heard that one was planned both at the Bottle District (if they ever decide to go through on that project) and some where in the Soulard area.

As for the Westin, I have heard that our Westin is regarded by business travelers as being one of the best and is known for it's continued wonderful customer service. However, I have friends/family that have stayed at both the Sheraton downtown and Clayton and they both have notoriously bad customer service, rooms, etc.
