Not much visible progress on the Grand Bridge in the last few weeks.

PostMar 03, 2012#277

Partial opening has been pushed back to late June.

Not surprising; I pass this bridge every day, and hardly ever see any workers on site.

I don't know if it is a function of an improving economy or what, but the main detour for Grand to I-64, the Vandeventer exit (at the junction)/on ramp is getting rather congested of late (by St. Louis standards)...looking forward to the Grand viaduct reopening...

Seeing it via MetroLink yesterday, I don't get the odd yellow-ish precast pieces. They've been used in Vandeventer project and probably elsewhere too. TO me, it just looks really cheap.

Its mediocrity at its best. I wish the city had the funds to retain a professional with better taste who could oversee the design and aesthetics of all city projects. If you are designing something to last decades, spend some time to ensure you have the best possible design for your budget. I know its not done yet but after looking at the Comptom bridge I don't have high hopes for cohesive design.

I would simply prefer that it be all the same color. (I have low expectations - and even those aren't met)

Does anyone know when the Metrolink station will open up at Grand? I had thought that it was supposed to open before the entire bridge was replaced.

SLU has a decent project page. According to them the bridge is scheduled to open to one lane each direction on Sat July 14 and the Metro stop will open late July or early August.

^ Can't wait, and I think the wait will be worth it. Can't wait for fixed transit to go down Grand as well.

I'll just be glad when they're finally done fixing all the north-south bridges/overpasses.

So after Grand Ave. and the Kingshighway "hump", is there any talk of work being needed on the Hampton Ave. bridge?

^ not sure if there are plans to replace the Hampton bridge, but MODOT will be replacing the Jefferson Avenue Bridge over 64/40 before too long.

That's just great news. {end sarcasm} They couldn't have done that at the same time the Jefferson Ave. railroad overpass was being replaced?

Any word on how long that project will take?

Drove by Grand bridge today, they were painting the stripes. Both lanes where done. It seems just cosmetic things are left (ie glass on the elevators from Grand metro stop). On a sad note, the Pevely smoke stack was torn down...

I heard at least around a year on the Jefferson bridge over 64/40. I know they have been working on some sort of piping/sewer lines around it this past year. My guess at why they didn't tear them both down at the same time, is one needs access to the businesses (hotel and UPS shipping center) as well as access to one or the other highway. It allows more possible routes around. Just me speculating though...

Looks like it belongs in a city instead of being an anywhere highway overpass. Always could be better, but this is such a fantastic improvement. Just one design complaint - why are pedestals for the towers brick? It's ahistoric and very out of place. They should be stone (or faux stone in this case).

I like it, definitely a visual improvement from what I can tell from the pics. I like what the towers add to the vista.

I agree with the brick comment, for some reason the base doesn't make much sense visually with the tower...I know metal and brick are combined all the time, but something feels off? Regardless, I think it's coming together nicely.

That bridge is quite an improvement, I hope the towers and Metro station overhangs are creatively lit up at night. Also near the bridge, SLU has graded the NW corner of Grand and Chouteau and installed the brick and metal gate at the corner.

Maybe I'm seeing the picture wrong, but shouldn't the sidewalk line up with the stanchions of the towers? It seems that the sidewalk loses several feet of width for the bridge-level tower "legs" when it would have made more sense to create a consistently wide, straight path directly through it...

But for that one quibble, a nice design -- too bad the buildings immediately adjacent to it are being leveled...

Uh, where's the much-vaunted bike lane? If they're pulling a paint-a-bicycle-on-the-shoulder move like on the Jefferson bridge, I'll be very disappointed. Someone should send the engineers in charge over these bridges on bikes.
