The old bridge isn't even gone yet, and new piers are already rising.

Bump. Has anyone seen any press at all on the bridge lately? I'm curious whether it's on schedule to open in 6 months. Seems unlikely to me.

Yeah, hasn't been much visible progress lately. I suppose, if their using steel girders, that they are being fabricated off site, then just need to be delivered and bolted together atop the piers. Things will probably move quickly then.

The last I heard is that the bridge will open in mid May. Since it comes from the City I would add a month or two to that ;)

With all the concrete and asphalt work for the bridge deck, it'll be tough to open anything in six months because winter will be just winding down.

Steel is now arriving on site.

The stretch of Grand between Chouteau and Park is undergoing a nice upgrade with tall trees (ginko I believe) being planted on the easements between sidewalks/Grand near the SLU medical campus and Tenet hospital. The trees are surrounded by ornate metal protectors. Also, the medians and signage are being replaced, hopefully to include plantings. Looks really good so far.

The main steel girders are going up. Things should really start moving now.

At the Grand-Choutaeu intersection the median is in on Grand, and I didn't see any left turn lane constructed to go west on Chouteau (but I was driving). Can anybody confirm. Left turn lanes are necessary.

Well, prior to construction you couldn't turn left onto Chouteau from Grand. During construction you can, but I wouldn't be surprised if it goes back to the old alignment when finished. I agree with you though and hope it's there.

See, it's things like this that make absolutely no sense to me about street planning in St. Louis. These are two major road which connect to other major roadways and yet the street planning encourages drivers to filter down a single road (toward highways, no doubt) when the alternate of turning down Chouteau makes much more sense.

^ Right. To get from FPSE to South Grand we would most often take Chouteau to Grand, but then have to take Magnolia to Tower Grove Ave on the way back - or just make a left hand turn onto Chouteau since there was little traffic. The threshold in St. Louis for traffic, any traffic is so low, that we put a correspondingly high premium on removing all obstacles to vehicular flow.

I'd figure this means the remaining girders over the Metrolink tracks are going in.
Beginning after midnight today - and again early Friday and Saturday mornings -eastbound MetroLink passengers will board shuttles at the Central West End Station and be taken to the Union Station and Civic Center stations.

The "stone" facing is now going up on the North abutment, as well as one of the tower thingies.

Latest update: The project is running a couple of weeks behind, but they hope to have at least one lane open in each direction by the end of May.

I know there's little use in talking about it now. But would something like this even be possible?

I think a few years back (early 2000's) something like this was proposed for the Eads Bridge within the archways of the structure - if I'm not mistaken it was included as part of a Arch Grounds plan (pre-CAR 2015).

Keeping Wash Ave in place and dotting the archways of Eads Bridge with something similar to this would make a nice transition between the contemporary (future) Arch Grounds and the historic Laclede's Landing.

^FYI - it would be great if you could provide some context or an excerpt to any links. I know I'm unlikely to click if I have no idea what the heck it is.

Was that an official proposal? I know I suggested that in a thread here years ago, but I don't remember anyone with any sort of skill or knowledge or ability acutally propose anything like that...

Anyway, shops under Grand Avenue wouldn't work in any way or fashion. There are no adjacent streets and can't be due to the railroad tracks. It's a neat concept, but only suited to very particular sites.

A couple of stills from a You Tube video about St Louis reconstruction. The first one shows the grand bridge in a bustling midtown:

The second, a still from the day the bridge was demolished:

Makes you want to weep.

Not meaning to get off track but with the garage coming down this would be awesome. is there any way to bring it up to the Arch Comp people?

You can find their contact info on cityarchriver.org. The plan was to open up the arches for pass-throughs to Laclede's Landing from the Arch grounds, but I haven't seen anything recently.

Randomly, I posted on the same topic recently. Not for the Eads section, but for the I-70 section of overpasses.

http://marketingurbanism.blogspot.com/2 ... -from.html

I'd love to see this kind of creative use of space around the city, instead of leaving dead zones. If we can't demolish crappy infrastructure, we can make the best of it.
