And I guess that's why they call it art... But I wouldn't say she was struggling in the least.

all posts should go THERE as they dont directly relate to the title of this thread
Thanks for digging that up. I ran out of time last night after doing homework, but I should be able to move them tonight.
Done
Thanks for the merge, Matt. Saturday was another great day of contributions to the betterment of Lucas Park.
Some of the Highlights
- All the benches are now painted a glorious green as compared to their prior dilapidated appearance.
- Many of the trees needing trimming in the former children's center area have been trimmed.
- White picket fences in the former children's area have been removed.
- Finished edging, performed more raking and swept around the park perimeter
Other Items of Interest
While picking up some trash, I observed persons smoking drugs in the park near a bench. Calling the police, they responded within a minute's time. Unfortunately, I hadn't continued to watch what they did with the drugs and he couldn't search everyone. His advice was to stay on the phone with 911, provide accurate descriptions and if possible watch what they do with the illegal substance. By keeping more watchful eyes on the park, we can hold lawbreakers accountable for their actions. The tide will turn...
Additionally, I ran into Maureen, a homeless woman who has helped us in the park cleaning project. While we were talking, I noticed she was carrying an art portfolio. She began talking passionately about art and I suggested introducing her to Mary of Crepes in the City who is also an art lover and displays art in the restaurant. They met later that day and both are encouraged about a possible partnership.

A little later after inno called the police, we had to call again.
A female dropped trou and peed on a tree in front of children and right next to a guy sleeping on the ground. Police showed pretty quickly and she was removed from the park.
Meanwhile, the park looks much, much better. A lot cleaner, a lot more visibility, and more and more neighbors are using the park as a park.
This Saturday, we'll be out again, this time to play some games like frisbee, bocce ball, dog walking, etc. In the meantime, use the park as a park and the nuisance behavior and criminal activity will go away.

Thought I would share some pictures from this weekend...

Great, Kaceeeeeeee holds another meeting. That'll show 'em.
Well Kacie showed up at the DSLRA meeting last night and then quickly left.
A bunch of us wanted to ask her why she was endorsing someone like Larry Rice who doesn't follow the mayor's 10 year plan by speaking at his "event" on Oct. 3rd and then camping out with the homeless.
She is consistently creating a divide between the residents of those that have housing and those that do not.
The issues with Lucas park are NOT about homelessness, but rather revolve around crime, safety, and quality of life issues. Whether those that commit crimes have a home or not doesn't matter. ANYONE that pees in public, defecates in public, uses drugs, doesn't clean up dog poo, should be held accountable for their actions.
Her continual framing of the issue as an "us vs. them" is not only disrespectful to both parties, but does more harm than good.
She needs to get on board with the mayor's 10 year plan and stop feeding the ego of Larry Rice.
During his "event" some residents had to call the police for disturbances in the park. We had told her about this prior to the permit, but she didn't listen and instead told us ...

Did this behavior occur during previous years when New Life sponsored Night's Out with the homeless? I don't think so. You can thank me for being fair and not abusing my authority by pulling permits for organizations who want to have events in a public park.
Regardless, of the lewd and nuisance behaviors that occur by city residents in Lucas Park that does not influence a not for profit organization from having public use of a public park.

Isn't she the Alderwomen that peed in the trashcan?
I believe it was Irene Smith who feigned peeing during a filibuster in 2001...

I currently have some free time available these days. Does anyone know if there are any volunteer opportunities available to clean and maintain the park?

Volunteers complete a $4 million project in 8 days... for FREE.
They were tired of waiting for the state and govt to fix the problem, so they did it themselves. Just shows what we can do with out Big Brother.

I like the story and they seem to have done it for much, much less than $4M, but it wasn't "FREE." It took 8 days and the use of heavy equipment.
Thanks for everyone coming out, we had around 20 people raking, shoveling, and cleaning the park. The plants we planted last year seemed to have survived the winter and the park looks a lot cleaner.
This should be a good year for making progress in the park.
We are awaiting funding from the city for park improvements such as:
1) Fixing the drinking fountain
2) Installation of a permanent dog park
3) Removal of the trees on St. Charles
4) Replanting of size appropriate trees
5) Replacement of the light pole that was damaged when an idiot (read drunk) drove his car and did donuts in the park taking it down last year.
