3. Best deli - Mom's Deli

I used to live in stl hills near Mom's Deli, and i went there several times because it was voted best deli in stl by the rft several years in a row, and i loooove a good sandwhich. No offense to dear ol mom, but am i the only one who thinks "what's the big deal?" with those sandwhiches? sorry mom, xoxo.

Don't know where that is either.

I'll claim it for the Grove! It's on Chouteau between Grand and Vandeventer in what's now a relatively industrial area.

Live near Mom's now, and go there often as a result. It's not great, but it's better than Subway or any of the other national sub places.

I'll take a Benton Park from Blues City Deli over Mom's any day of the week though.

Does Mom's have hot sandwiches? I've never been there despite living pretty close.

LeGrand's on Donovan in STL Hills is a pretty good place to grab a sandwich.

1. Best special occasion - Trattoria Marcella

1a. Best Steak - Anne Gunns

2. Best Breakfast - Pumpernickles

3. Best Deli - Kohn's in Creve Coeur

4. Best Italian/not pizza - Giovannis

5. Best Pizza - Talaynas (stl style), Vitos (non stl style local), Papa Johns (chain)

6. Best bar food - TGI Fridays (Sorry, but I haven't found another bar that can serve good, large buffalo wings)

6a Best Burger - Hardees Mushroom Swiss 1/3 lb thickburger. If there's a better burger on this planet, I haven't had it. And I've had a lot of burgers.

7. Best Mexican - Zuzu's

8. Best Cheap eats - Zuzu's

9. Best food with a view - Forest Park Boathouse

10. Best Greek - Momos

11. Best german - Not enough restaurants in the city to make a fair comparison

12. Best French - See above

13. Best Scandinavian - What?

14. Best soul food - I know of no restaurant that makes good meatloaf, mashed potatoes and gravy, and macaroni and cheese anymore. Not one

15. Best Barbeque - Bandanas...I guess....I haven't had any good BBQ since KC Masterpiece closed down, and I haven't been to the plush pig yet (I hear its good)

16. Best Eastern European - never been

17. Most Romantic - Forest Park Boathouse

18. Best Middle Eastern - Saleems

19. Best Indian - India Rasoi

20. Best Chinese - LuLu

21. Best Japanese - I Love Mr. Sushi

21a Best Vietnamese - Mai Lee

22. Best Thai - never had thai in STL

23. Best Cajun - we've got cajun restaurants?

24. Best Desert - Oberweiss Dairy

25. Best Coffee - Not a coffee guy

26. Best Diner - Olivette Diner. Don't argue, just go there at lunchtime and ask for a cheese burger and a milk shake. Beats anything you've ever had before. EVER.

On a total side note - STL NEEDS MALAYSIAN FOOD SOMETHING AWFUL. IF YOU'VE NEVER HAD A CURRY LAKSA OR HOKKIEN MEE OR CHAR KWAY TEOW YOU ARE MISSING OUT ON A MASTICATION EXPERIENCE UNLIKE ANY OTHER. I FORMALLY MOVE TO LET ALL MALAYS WHO WANT TO MOVE INTO THE US BE FORCED TO MOVE TO STL AND START UP RESTAURANTS. THAT IS ALL.

^ The burgers at Carl's are great, but the service has always been a bit too surly every time I've been there.

IMHO there are too many good places to eat in this town, and too many places with burgers just as good if not better, to tolerate mediocre service.

Good call - one of my favorites that doesn't seem to get much run.

Underrated burgers: Harry's on Southwest, Sundecker's

Overrated burger: Blueberry Hill

Blueberry Hill's burgers are good IMHO, but not great as they're purported to be.

If I had to pick, it would be a toss-up between Dooley's and The Royale. South Compton is right about that Kobe beef burger- I tried one when I was there last weekend and it was delicious!

And one of the few where you can actually get sharp cheddar on your burger.

Those are good too! But I was assuming we could only pick one place. O'Connell's has good chili too. One of the few places that does.

I listed O'Connell's as "Best Bar Food" and I still stand by that.
