^ Heh, ok. Say the bill amounts to $80. 80/5 is 16. 16-1.6 is 14.4. Therefore, an 18% tip is $14.40 by that algorithm. Maybe I'm a nerd, but it amused me thinking about it.

It's easier to tip $16 in the above situation. Especially after a few pints. For that matter, even before a few pints.
Or in the real world, if I had great service, I would make it even easier and leave $100.

Ever noticed (for us guys) that its easier to throw a few extra bucks on the table at Hooters or Show Me's?

Why, do they have great service?
Overtipping at Hooters is rewarding the wrong thing. That's basically akin to throwing cash at a stripper, IMO. They don't provide you with good service at all, they come and sit at your table and try to flirt (most aren't very good at it), meanwhile you're drink goes dry.
JCity,
If you leave 20% for adequate service? What do you do to the server who gives you outstanding service?
That's why I recommend the two buck rule. If you get great service, just add a couple more bucks to your tip. Because its easy to give a couple extra bucks, and two dollars isn't going to make or break anyone. I just think you should tip according to the service.

I wasn't trying to tell anyone how to tip, just giving my experience in why the creep happened from 15-20.
Also, I'm not advocating the 30% tip. I don't know where that number came from, and I'm not even sure I'd recognize a 30% tip if I got one (I'm sure I get them too). All I look for is 20% and up. If i get less than 20%, I'm disappointed, if I know that I gave them good service. If I know I messed up (first of all, I usually tell the table it was my fault), then I don't expect them to tip me 20%.
If you get poor service, tip accordingly. If you get good service, tip accordingly. Having a set # or % that you leave doesn't you and the server no good.
