Not the forward thinking bastion of County progressivism it is often held out to be.
(To be fair, some of the mansion dwellers on Lindell are no better).

It is one in same - Don't take it too far west - but here is a golden opportunity for Clayton and U city to talk about the futre. I think Extending the Loop Trolley to Clayton CBD as expressed in this thread is a great idea. Unfortunately, the inner suburbs leadership unwillingness to collaborate on zoning and development is really doing some harm to their future.

KMOX - St. Louis Laying Tracks for Cutting-Edge Technology Infrastructure
UNIVERSITY CITY (KMOX) - The planned Loop Trolley isn’t just a throwback to St. Louis’ streetcar roots. It’s also a reach into the future, positioning St. Louis with what backers call a “gigabit Main Street.”

^If a Downtown-Midtown-CWE streetcar line can be constructed so fiber optic conduits are layed simultaneously... what a City we will have.

Should this follow the Olive/Lindell route as has been heralded, then that opens up massive development opportunities, from the empty office space in Downtown to the open real estate along Olive west of 15th, past Wells Fargo to SLU (where the Billikens and Automobile Row businesses can tap into the hard lines as well!), and into the increasingly dense urban residential communities in the CWE.

Think of all the jobs!
Think of all the tax revenues!
Think of all the people!

Would fiber optic really make a huge difference? I imagine charter already partially uses fiber anyway. I thought they offered 100 mbps service already but I don't know at what price. I guess it would help create a technology leader image for STL and maybe drive costs down.

They're talking about gigabit speeds. So at least ten times faster.

Charter uses coax to the home and is farking expensive. Google Fiber, on the other hand, is farking fast and reasonably priced. Its a game changer.

FWIW - I get 50Mbps for $30/mo via Charter.

^ So I bet 20 times that for $70 wouldn't be too bad..

Guess so, but as a consumer, I don't know what I would do with 1GB that I can't/don't do with 50MB. I guess I'd keep my $40 and eat out a couple times.

That's what I'm saying. Greater speeds are available but people choose to go with the $15/mo plan because it serves them well. There are no services that can take advantage of anything close to those speeds. I don't see it as a game changer. I think that it may attract new businesses and innovation to the area though.

That's just a 12 month promotional price. After that, they jack up the price to who knows what. I pay $55 for 16 Mb/s ATT DSL and would love the option to pay $15 more for 62x the speed.

But you're not a start-up or small business that requires a superfast connection to provide breaking news, photos, videos, interactive services, social networking, and a reliable platform for hundreds of users. Oh wait..... nevermind.

nextSTL runs off a Virtual Private Server w/ linode.com. Anyway, don't wanna get us off "track" too much.

The Loop Media Hub RFI (Request for Information) from February 2012 lays out what they were hoping to accomplish at that point, including uninterrupted wi-fi.

I notice that the footprint for the Media Hub only goes east to the Delmar Metro station (one mile) — not the entire length of the streetcar line. Whatever the cost of laying the Loop cable, that's presumably the approximate cost per mile. To get downtown (during any potential streetcar construction), multiply that number by six.

I just can't find what that number is, though.

Here's all the conditions put on the Trolley by U City. Did St Louis put all this on them too? The hours of operation stick too.

were these service hours already the plan by Loop Trolley or were they cut back by UC?
