Yeah, I saw the location at Lindbergh Boulevard and Lemay Ferry Road the other day- and it's nothing to write home about. That said, any competition for Walgreens in this town can't be a bad thing. I wouldn't have expected a groundbreaking design for the Gravois/Germania location anyway since other uses in the area aren't exactly urban. Other than the Gyro House and nearby apartments and homes, everything around it looks pretty suburban (Steak 'N' Shake, Walgreens, Schnucks, McDonalds, and a couple of banks). So while I had no high hopes for the design, I'm glad it's coming to the neighborhood anyway.

Spirtas appears to be the demo contractor. They are doing utility disconnects right now.

I assumed this to be the case as well. Is this confirmed? Have you seen the plans?

Maybe CVS should jump on downtowns in the region including St. Louis and Clayton? I think Walgreens intentionally abandoned downtown St. Louis.

...

One store will be built at the southwest corner of Lemay Ferry Road and Lindbergh Boulevard in St. Louis County, and another will open at the northeast corner of Gravois and Hampton avenues. Both stores will start construction this year and employ 25 people when they’re open, said CVS Director of Public Relations Mike DeAngelis.

The 13,000-square-foot stores will have drive-thru windows and photo development services. Cedarwood Development of Akron, Ohio, is the developer.

Woonsocket, R.I.-based CVS closed last week on seven property parcels at Gravois and Hampton avenues for $2 million to make way for the new pharmacy in the city of St. Louis. The largest piece of property, at 7420 Gravois, was formerly an Amoco gas station. CVS bought the property at 7334 Lindbergh Boulevard in St. Louis County this year for an undisclosed amount.

St. Louis Deputy Mayor Barb Geisman said city officials are in talks with CVS about opening additional locations throughout the region. “We’re excited CVS has decided to open a location in the city, and that’s a great location for them,” Geisman said.

A CVS CarePlus pharmacy opened in less than 2,000 square feet in the lobby of the AT&T building at 909 Chestnut St. downtown last year, but it is operated by CVS’ specialty pharmacy subsidiary and is not part of CVS’ retail store fleet. The CarePlus pharmacy is available for Caremark plan participants.

Let me just say that I can't believe CVS would locate within the city. Are they unaware of the payroll tax? (where's the troll emoticon when one needs it?)

I think it'd be amazing for CVS to put a location in the Loop. There doesn't seem to be any pharmacy or convenience store there.

Does anyone know something I don't? I also couldn't find a grocery store there...

There's a Schnuck's on Olive just north of the Loop - a pretty nice one. I do remember there being a rumor of a two-story CVS (or maybe Walgreen's) rumored for the vacant lot next to 609 that's now owned by Washington U.

Here are some more urban Walgreens stores.

The newest one in Times Square New York

In Columbus

Chicago

Chicago

New Orleans

I don't know what you have to do to get Walgreens to build a unique store in your area but they do exist.

I thought I'd posted this somewhere, but can't find a CVS thread other than this.... In short, CVS's plan to build at Lindell/Sarah has been rejected by the neighborhood association...

It's worth noting that the new CVS being built at Hampton and Gravois willl share the intersection with two other big names in the local pharmacy business: Walgreens and Schnucks.

Now, if Steak'n Shake starts selling scripts, we've got a real problem!

But seriously, CVS must have a great deal of confidence in their business to locate a store in such close proximity to that kind of competition.

Maybe someone can explain why they didn't seek a city location with an untapped market. There are several areas without a Walgreens or major grocery store nearby: East Loop, Benton Park, FPSE, Columbus Sq, Dogtown to name a few. Wouldn't it make more sense to grab customers that aren't already patronizing the other big boys? I mean, why struggle to lure customers from the competition when there are underserved areas to tap into?

That would be great. Could you take a stab at possible/probable locations? I think one would do very well near the conventions center, in BPV, or along gateway mall.

I've seen this in several cities around the country. You have to remember that the pharmacuetical industry is the most profitable industry in the country.

I've heard in the Broadway/4th and Locust vicinity, which could mean a few options - the old Woolworth's space/SLC garage, the Merc Library, Security Building.

There are signs for a CVS "coming soon" on the former McMahon Ford site at Chippewa and Gravois.

NEWS...

The South County Manager at the new CVS said the STL Metro will see an addition 22 stores open soon... and even downtown. Now I know CVS is downtown in the ATT Center building already, but I guess he is talking about a full size store downtown. I would love to see this as one of the new stores on Washington at Convention (possibly where STL Centre was and the construction on retail is going in.
I would like to see them there and away from Schnucks Culinaria and the pharmacy there.
