Hopefully the proposed Armed Offender docket will help with sentencing in gun crimes.

Saw a list of the top 50 largest cities ranked by "park score" - http://parkscore.tpl.org/rankings.php. Was pretty surprised when I didn't see St. Louis near the top, then pretty confused when it wasn't listed at all.
"The Trust for Public Land analyzed the park systems of the 50 largest cities by population within the city boundary. Some large metropolitan areas were not included because the core city is too small to rank within the largest 50 cities. These cities include Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, and St. Louis."
Wish this applied to crime rankings instead.

Immigrant shot and killed at 7-11. Terrible story. Just arrived in St. Louis a year ago from Bhutan with wife and small child.

Crazy night in St. Louis last night with 16 people being shot and at least 1 stabbed. Unbelievable.

That's 16 emergency room visits we need to pay for plus 16 possible lifetime disability payments (FYI, people are being signed up for disability in droves, record numbers).
Horrible night, this layered over 2 murdered immigrants who were just trying to do their job is going to reaffirm a lot of fears, and create some new ones.

Here's more about the guy who came to America and viewed it as hope and an opportunity but instead got needlessly murdered for no reason by our city's great cancer. These cancer cells prevent healthy cancer cells from growing anywhere around it. Like other cancers, there doesn't seem to be a cure for this one either.
Tragedies like this should provoke total outrage amongst the community but it will be forgotten soon and it will happen again and so the story goes in a place where we've come to actually expect a certain level of sickness from the cancer.
The victims brother works at Culinaria.

how about the abmush last night of the senior police officer? I think these people need one or two strikes and you're out. get rid of drug laws so we can empty prisons of people who commit drug crimes and actully fill them with violent criminals. Someone who shoots at another or especially a cop and you get locked up for life, even if the person lives or the perpetrator completely misses, as in this case.

^I'm fine with half a strike and you're out. If only we had a superhero who could catch these guys who could stop these cretins who are dead set on committing senseless acts of violence and hurling their sorry carcasses into the sun before they get a chance to harm a hair on the head of an innocent person.
BTW, more questions than answers on this so far but police reporting 4 dead in shooting inside the Business incubator on Cherokee St. this afternoon.

Apparent murder-suicide involving a business run by Somali immigrants. Four dead include the gunman. It has been a tragic month for immigrants in south city.

^Yes, our immigrant friends need our help and support now more than ever.
Sadly as long as there is workplace or family tension (in yesterday's case perhaps both) and mental illness these kinds of murder/suicides will always be around.

Don't mean to hijack thread or marginalize these violent events, but in the last two days ~6 individuals, including children, have died in car accidents in the St. Louis area. These are tragic events. In my opinion there's actually something we can do about it - drive less, first, then build a city that doesn't require people to drive everywhere.

Yup. Volunteering time/talent at The International Institute may be a good way to help the immigrant commnunity for those who can.southsidepride wrote:^Yes, our immigrant friends need our help and support now more than ever.
And guns. Don't forget the guns.southsidepride wrote:Sadly as long as there is workplace or family tension (in yesterday's case perhaps both) and mental illness these kinds of murder/suicides will always be around.

^Yes, guns in the hands of the wrong people sadly make the body count go higher.
Another crazy weekend in chicago. 7 dead, 41 others shot.

With that much violence, I am surprised I didnt hear much about STL crime. Nothing on STLTODAY, did we really have a nice and peaceful weekend?

I wonder if they'll rename "Pleasant Court" in response to this shooting.
Kirkwood is safer than average. This murder is unfortunate, but doesn't change that: http://www.city-data.com/crime/crime-Ki ... souri.htmlleeharveyawesome wrote:Quietly it's reaching Kirkwood....

Ok, I'll bite and throw up some good news: From January to May, St. Louis violent crime is down 26% from last year, and property crime is down 2.8% from last year.

The "it" is senseless murder involving young people that County residents typically associate with the city. Let's not be ridiculous here. I believe we have already turned the corner on spreading out the crime more evenly amongst the City and County starting with North County many years ago.
The City crime stats will go down simply based on this more even distribution of the population. Now, I like to be controversial on this forum but can anyone argue with this point?

Which is why per capita crime likely matters more.leeharveyawesome wrote:The "it" is senseless murder involving young people that County residents typically associate with the city.
