Interesting you mentioned this. I have noticed the same thing occurring downtown. Patrol cars will sit in a street parking spot for days.flipz wrote:I've been noticing them leaving police cars strategically parked all over the city. Is this all a sign of the new police chief, local control coming, or the upcoming election? All of them?

Shooting on the Landing last night.

Nothing like sending the out of towners home with a good story that lives up to the St. Louis expectation.

I get the sense there is a business down there that attracts troublemakers. Won't name names but I think I know which one.

^I'm not sure, although the city actually has a fairly large force given our population. I'm not sure more officers would have prevented this shooting. Officers were in the area and quickly apprehended the suspect.
While our first concern is for the victim, this sort of crime in a tourist area brings with it added frustration for those investing their lives in the city's resurgence. Granted the civil liberty issues, I do wonder at what point we begin discussing CCTV in such areas.

Which business? Morgan Street Brewery? Metro St. Louis?downtown2007 wrote:I get the sense there is a business down there that attracts troublemakers. Won't name names but I think I know which one.
It happened after 3:00am - after the bars closed. It was gang on gang related as usual. UGH

Ugh, the comments. Why do I even bother looking?
Sorry for the the death of the young man from Sorento. My dad's family is from there. When you come to downtown St. Louis a night, be warned that it can be a dangerous place to visit. There's an abundance of criminals and a shortage of law enforcement. These predators are not like normal people and they have no regard for your personal property or your life. My family seldom goes downtown except for a ballgame and then we leave right after the event. Why take the risk of being assaulted.

People from the suburbs are out of their ***** minds. I was raised all over West County and was told my whole life that St. Louis was the most dangerous city in America. People even compared it to Baghdad. When I got older and actually started hanging out in the city, I realized they were all wrong and simply had warped ideas of the city as a result of them having grown up in St. Louis in the '70s and '80s when things weren't like they are now.
These days when I take those same people to the city, they're impressed by how much has changed. They say it's a different place. They didn't know how much different it is now because they never go down there...Except for the occasional ball game.

20+ cars broken into in midtown and downtown last night, mostly midtown. What a pain for everyone.
Yikes. What a great weekend this was, to showcase our city to everyone in town for the Missouri Valley Conference tournament.

Look, we have 40+ years as a case study. We know the tendencies of cities/demographics. If the MVC doesn't like it then have the tournament in Omaha or Wichita or Des Moines where a whole different set of tendencies exist.
And if anyone else doesn't particularly find these tendencies appealing then move to Portland. If it isn't your cup of tea then move to Austin.
Meanwhile, it's possible that the city cannot afford more cops yet the USA has spent 27M teaching pottery classes in Morocco the last few years (note that Moroccans have been making pottery since at least 5 BC).

I certainly hope they don't move the tourney; as a downtown resident it was nice seeing more than a handful of people actually walking around the 'hood at all hours. The break-ins are whatever, that happens everywhere all the time, I get it.
The stabbings/shootings are particularly worrisome, though. 1:50 AM? That's hardly after hours on a Saturday night in downtown St. Louis. I wasn't on the Landing this weekend (I rarely am, in fact), but I would have assumed the area was fairly crowded at that time of night, especially with everyone in town for the MVC tournament.
Is it really a lack of cops that's our problem?

I'm not suggesting they should or would move the tourney. St. Louis is probably the best place for it and the crime is probably just a blip on the screen of the overall experience. I'm just saying that nobody should really be shocked or surprised.
One should always be shocked and surprised by trash doing trashy, illegal, and/or sociopathic things. It is an affront to the concept of civilization.I'm just saying that nobody should really be shocked or surprised.
From the Post Dispatch:
I don't understand this "no chase" rule. Can anyone explain it?Witnesses described the suspects' vehicles as a red 2013 Chevrolet Impala and a silver late-model Dodge Ram pickup. Dotson said police at one point spotted the Impala, but, per department policy, did not pursue it. "Criminals are becoming smarter technologically and know how to get into these cars quicker and that we won't chase them," he said. Dotson said police have been tracking the number of cars that have fled from them since Feb. 26 just to see how often bad guys are getting away. It's happened 64 times, he said.
Numerous deaths and injuries resulting in high-speed police chases. This isn't solely a St. Louis phenomenon.StL2003 wrote:I don't understand this "no chase" rule. Can anyone explain it?

Did I read this right? The string of car break-ins last night netted the thieves FOUR new guns to do stupid things with. You never think about it at least I don't but it's amazing how many guns are out there all around you at any given moment.

But therein lies the problem. If we revisit that sentence clinically and coldly, then we should not be surprised that trashy people do trashy things, because that would be in the nature of trash to do so. (And no, that ain't code for nothing). Smokers smoke. Vegetarians eat vegetables. Water's wet. Sky's blue. Women have secrets. Trash does trashy things.onecity wrote:One should always be shocked and surprised by trash doing trashy, illegal, and/or sociopathic things. Where we should be is disgusted that we allow violence to take place, especially so openly as an affront to civilization. Sure, violence historically has and will continue to exist, as it is in the nature of us as humans (evolved monkeys with thumbs).
What we need to be is active in expressing this disgust and proactively seeking change. We can lament all we want to such violence taking place, as it is abhorrent, but what are we going to do about it? Seriously, what are we going to do about it? Talking about it on this thread means jack squat in the real world. What are we doing out there to change things? Who's written the Police Chief a letter about this? Who's asked the Governor to send in reinforcements to help STL's Finest? Are we asking for CCTV cameras on more corners, like there are in the 21st Ward? Who's volunteering with at-risk children, or working for economic opportunities for poor people? Who's fighting to end the "no snitch" culture and helping neighborhoods no longer be afraid? Who gives to Backstoppers? Who's in a neighborhood watch program?
Now, I'm not saying I do all these things, but maybe I should, and maybe we all can. That could make some difference. And, if we are not trashy people, then that should be in our nature, or else we're letting our City crumble thorugh indifference.
Eh, just some thoughts...

As reported in December, the Central West End is moving forward with CCTV on a larger scale. This is mainly a private initiative from the neighborhood and its institutions. Were I Lacledes Landing, Downtown Partnership or Grand Center, Inc, I would be doing much the same.

Does anyone know where I could find a reputable list of every police department in St. Louis County? The county government page lists the 20 municipal fire departments and 23 fire districts, but for police, it only lists the municipalities that have contracts with SLCPD. I went to the attorney general's website, but there doesn't seem to be a way to only look at departments in one county.

^ I guess if a municipality doesn't have a contract with SLCPD, they must have their own department? Wait, no...I think some munis contract with other munis...hmmm...
