I try to explain this stuff to people using data and (gasp) statistics, but I'm frequently looked at as a crackpot. Unfortunately my years of statistical training left me with an understanding that there's just really not that much stuff worrying about.
I'd rather walk around the worst area of East St. Louis in the middle of the night wearing Mr. T style gold chains than drive a 50 mile commute for a year. The former, I may get robbed, but I'll live, but the latter, I'll be dead.
^ Right. The response I get is something like "cite all the statistics you want, when you get assaulted and your home gets broken into you won't care about statistics." The other issue is that people wrongly assume that they control whether they get in a car accident, but assume there's nothing they can do to prevent a home break-in or keep from getting mugged. I understand that one's passive, something that happens to someone and it often attributed to an accident. Just read the language used to describe car accidents - it often says something like "a car swerved into oncoming traffic, killing two people" while a mugging is very personal and is described as one person purposefully harming another". When someone's shot, the news doesn't say, "a gun fired a bullet that hit someone and killed them." No, they say one person killed another. I think they should address traffic accidents the same way, "A 32-year old man drove his car across the highway median and killed two people."
Did anybody hear this last night at Tucker and Washington? Looks like it stepped from the group at Lure nightclub.
"Two St. Louis police officers were on their way to break up a fight in a downtown parking lot early this morning when a man fired shots at them.
At least that's the word from police, who say the shots came from a man standing outside a newer, gray Pontiac Grand Prix with tinted windows. The incident happened at about 2:30 a.m. in the 1100 block of St. Charles Street. Police give this account:"
Yeah, I woke up to gunshots around 2:30am last night. I counted at least 15-20 police cars and a few cops w/ german shepards. Below is some video of the aftermath. By the time I had taken this video, most of the mob had dispersed.
It's basically chaotic every Thursday night around closing time at Lure. A murder occurred stemming from the same club a few years back. The club promoters and the format are to blame, because the other nights aren't so bad.

According to a commenter on the Qik video post, this weekly event is promoted as, "Redd Hott Thursdays." A little digging indicates its hosted by a "Miss Jeannette." They're also affiliated with a club named Social House Soulard which has a similar reputation.
I went to Lure once when it first opened. The owners must have gone to Pure in Vegas and tried to replicate it on Wash ave on a $1000 buildout budgets. What a dump.
Is there anyway to get the the cops to just stay at the corner of Washington and Tucker and issue tickets for "Disturbing the piece" for drivers of card with their loud music. Considering most of Washingont Ave is residential, I don’t see how those cars are allowed to blast their music like that. Hopefully the ticket can be like $250 which would easily cover the officers time estimating that he gets 4 cars an hour.

Is there anyone else we can contact in addition to the alderman?
The other part of the promotion componet is the co-owner of Lure named Phil. It appears he is also associated with http://www.liquidassets-events.com. If you are tired of the noise, garbage, etc I would recommend you calling Lure at 241-LURE.

Thanks for the additional info. It's important that neighbors and other interested parties speak out if they want downtown and Washington Avenue to stay a safe and conducive environment to live, work, and play. Below are some additional contacts:
Downtown2007 wrote:Would contacting the Excise Commissioner or the Nuisance property data base be of any help?
People can do as they wish but from what I read of the Dolce article, the excise commissioner came in downstream. Also, the nuisance property database isn't geared towards bars. The contacts above should be a great start.

I would already consider this situation as downstream. The club has attracted a very rough crowd on Thursday nights for the past 6 months. There are other nights I am suspect as well. We all predicted something like this happening and thankfully no one was hurt. If a cop or bystander was injured or killed it would have been a nightmare. It mat be worth contacting Krailberg to may sure this stays on the radar.
Our Neighborhood Stabilization Officer (NSO) just got off the phone with me and provided some information on this topic. Apparently she's received many calls and emails of late.
She said the property owner has received or will be receiving a cease and desist order regarding nuisance activities. She advised that it's important to document further nuisance activity which may be done by calling the police (non-emergency # is 314.231.1212.) If the nuisance activity is coming from Lure, be sure to provide their address -- 1204 Washington.
There are a variety of actions that can be taken if nuisance activities do not stop. It seems that the city holds building owners accountable and the sh*t rolls downhill from there. Hopefully they and Club Lure will be responsible and take action to prevent this from recurring.

It looks like the raging hordes of teens of the Loop from 2008 are back. U City has expanded the curfew. Back in 2008 the incidents at the Delmar and FP stations didn't help the metro tax effort back then. Do you think treating teens like this is fair? How else could they deal with these large groups that show up and freak out patrons?
Honestly, I feel old saying this, but I think its a good idea. I went to the Loop a few weeks ago and was shocked at the hundreds of teens hanging out. Unfortunately a few bad apples will ruin it for everyone. The Loop is too important to St Louis to let it be over run. Did everyone hear about the riot at the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City? That is the last thing the area needs.
Good news! Heard a snippet on NPR this morning about how the SLPD's focus on downtown and other neighborhoods (Soulard, CWE, Grand Center) has reduced the number of car break ins by something like a third (sorry I don't have the actual stats). They have apprehended a ring that admitted to breaking into as many 30-40 cars a night.
I hate to be a downer but I don't see that good news lasting very long. There is a subculture that is in place in which car clouting is a solid job. I don't see what options there are for those members of the alternative economy to cross over to the mainstream. What jobs will they take to replace their income? If none, why would they "retire"?
