ST. LOUIS — A company that provides secure space for government agencies and contractors plans to build a 120,000-square-foot office building in the Cortex technology district in a bid to target the region's growing geospatial and cybersecurity industries, officials announced Tuesday.

Virginia-based Westway Services Group, a private real estate investment and development company, aims to have its new office building at Forest Park Avenue and Sarah Street open by late 2023. The company specializes in building sensitive compartmented information facilities, or SCIF, that allow the government and companies to process, handle or discuss classified or sensitive information. Westway does not know when construction would begin, officials said.

“We are excited to welcome Westway to Cortex and to the growing national security community in St. Louis," Cortex CEO and President Sam Fiorello said in a statement. "Cortex has seen the demand for secure workspace from our tenants and prospective tenants. Westway specializes in meeting this demand and will serve as a national draw."

In addition to Cortex, Westway also will operate 75,000 square feet of SCIF space in downtown St. Louis' Globe Building, which has already lured in several geospatial firms.

Business and civic organizations have rallied around the geospatial industry, boosted by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency's new $1.7 billion campus that's under construction in north St. Louis.

Thanks,

This suggests some infill as I believe their is at least two surface lots kitty corner from each other at FPP & Sarah Street.   A fair piece of real estate at 120,000 sf.  Unless mistaken or missing another possibility?   Will go nice with Cortex M breaking ground along Sarah Street as well if i got my bearings

Got a couple thoughts.   I wonder if Greater Stl/CORTEX are making progress with landing West Coast Bioscience company as it seems a very good fit.  Especially considering how much still happens with bioscience here in the Bay and if CORTEX could just land a silver of that.  For one the Bayer has a huge Berkeley expansion in the works.

Second, good to hear a new project breaking ground in near term.  From reporting it sounds like it is already in the works and will happen sooner than later.   However, this project seems like a really good fit for NOW District project that would be a nice upside for downtown.  So in some respects wish this was a NOW District announcement and keep things moving on three fronts - CORTEX - life/bio science, NOW - Geospatial/Fintech and Danforth Center - Plant Science.   But either way it is very good news for city.

Will this be built on the SE corner of Forest Park and Sarah, or the NW corner?

^ I had a similar question.  My guess is SE as that’s technically within the boundaries of the district, though I’m not sure if that matters.  I would think a 120,000sqft building would need to have some good height to be on that NW corner.

Wonder if the reporting has caught a few people off guard.  It seems like Greater Stl Inc. would have brought it up in their progress report as an easy win and or CORTEX itself would have a press release or social media announcement or two already.    Just speculation on my part so hoping the cart wasn't put before the horse on this one.

Or you could support local free press and subscribe.  I believe I pay only ~$6.50 a month for stltoday.com and they usually have crazy cheap intro prices like $1 (yes, one dollar) for your first six months: https://www.stltoday.com/members/join/

The last two days have seen some significant Cortex partnership announcements...

Yesterday...
STL Post-Dispatch: Cortex partners with Defense Department to develop talent, technology for national security
The Cortex Innovation Community has signed a partnership agreement with the Department of Defense geared toward building a talent and technology pipeline for national security.

The program, the National Security Innovation Network, was established with the goals of encouraging startups and connecting the private sector with the Department of Defense...

NSIN is based in Washington, D.C., but has 11 regional offices, including a five-state Midwestern region based in St. Louis.

The Pentagon selected St. Louis two years ago as an “innovation hub” for NSIN, where it could work to foster a pipeline of talent and technology for national security, said Midwest regional director Jake Laktas.
Today...
STL Biz Journal: Cortex launches new innovation center to boost U.S. pharmaceutical supply chain
The Cortex Innovation Community has launched a new initiative to strengthen the U.S. supply chain for pharmaceutical ingredients.

Its Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API) Innovation Center @ Cortex will enhance those efforts. The nonprofit API Innovation Center wants to "address health security and foster job growth” and will seek to advance that mission by having businesses, researchers, academics and experts work together to find ways in which the U.S. can boost production of pharmaceutical ingredients.

“The API Innovation Center at Cortex is dedicated to addressing the fragility in the U.S. API supply chain and the risks to health security. Missouri, as the number-one-ranked state in the country for production of pharmaceutical APIs, is uniquely positioned to help secure the domestic supply chain,” said Tony Sardella, chair of the API Innovation Center...

The nonprofit also hopes to partner on creating a R&D facility. Fiorello said that could include partnering with Washington University to develop a high-end collaborative lab space to test different methods of manufacturing inside of one of the former MERS Goodwill buildings near Cortex. The university owns the buildings.
That last paragraph should really grab the interests of this forum. Looks like the old MERS Goodwill building could have even more utility going forward.

^That's an old design for the site. JEMA also created a residential concept where the Microsoft building is now.

Cortex and its new leadership could use a bump in some  good develoipment news whether it be Sandcrawler back under way and or 4343 moving forward.   Some rumblings by Greater St Louis of possible West Coast Bioscience making a splash but crickets lately.  Pretty sure it will remain quiet once holiday season kicks into full gear in a week or so.

Or at least it’s about time someone slaps a mural on that thing. Check out what Toledo, Ohio did to their massive grain elevators:
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cbsne ... ledo-ohio/

If freakin’ TOLEDO figured out how to pull that off, there is no excuse why we can’t and shouldn’t do it here.

That’s super cool, but the silos here are still in use and I don’t think RC has plans to go anywhere.  They just need to be painted or have lights projected on them.

Wichita has a cool one too:

There should definitely be a mural or lights on that silo. I can't believe it hasn't been done already.
