the compton water tower will be open to the public this saturday from 11-5
Back in April it was like $5. I highly recommend it. The view of the arch is just what you'd expect. It's the southward view that is most unique. (JB Bridge!) It's hard to get that from any other location.

awesome!
...i'll try to go!
They should open this place up more often...I took advantage of this weekend's tours & I think the water tower offers a unique vantage point and amazing views of the City and beyond.

great photo, wish I went there now. Anyway, it's now set as my desktop at work.
There are more shots on my <a href="http://brickcity.alejandroisonline.com/">blog</a> and on my <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/brickcity/">flickr account</a>
Here's another landmark that towers above the city...

I just wish it wasn't an overcast day...you're just above the treeline in the tower, so all the streets and houses are hidden. Certain views to the south make you feel like you're out in the middle of the country, it's a neat contrast

Great pictures. I love the one called "Southern View".

That photo doesn't even remind me of STL! For some reason it made me think of Pittsburgh...I was surprised to see the bluffs along the river and all that...I guess I have this misconception that it's all flat around us
Those are lovely shots--great job. The view was incredible from up there. You should go the next time it's open if you have't been.
hmmm... that angle looks familiar...

Just another reason to love this great city!! Thanks to all who had a hand in saving the tower, what a treasure! =D>
Are you sure it will be open for tours? Not only do those dates fall on Wednesday and Thursday, but the website you linked says that they are for for the year 2000, 9 years ago! Apr 15-16 fell on Saturday and Sunday in 2000.quincunx wrote:The Compton Hill Water Tower will be open for tours Apr 15-16, 10am - 5:30pm. Bring your camera!

The 16th is my birthday, which would make for a nice present if we were back in 2000.

You're right. I got excited. I called The Water Tower and Park Preservation Society and the message says it's open from noon to 4 the first Saturday of each month until November (including today!). $5 for adults $3 for kids 6-12.
Compton Hill Water Tower gets big fundraising push—before it’s too late
Compton Hill Tower, a French Romanesque Revival architectural gem built in 1898, stands prominently between I-44 and Russell Blvd next to the historic Compton Hill Reservoir. It is an exceptionally rare example of American Gilded Age standpipe water tower technology, one of only seven ornate standpipe towers remaining in the country, with three located here in St. Louis.
Losing this historic structure would be a tremendous loss. Having had the privilege of ascending its beautiful spiraling staircase to the observation room when it was still open to the public, I can attest that it is a unique and fascinating landmark that reflects the development of American cities through the advancement of their municipal infrastructure.
For years, the tower has required attention to its limestone walls, which have developed cracks that worsen each winter. The Water Tower & Park Preservation Society, with support from the City of St. Louis, is launching a capital campaign to fund the urgently needed masonry repairs.
The three-year initiative aims to raise approximately $8 million to restore this 128-year-old local treasure. The preservation society will host a town hall on Tuesday, 10/20/26, at 6:30 p.m. at Power Creative (3221 Oak Hill) to discuss the tower’s deteriorating condition and the restoration efforts.
