Landmarks Association of St. Louis presents Jesse Irwin, The Monads, and The Red-Headed Strangers in concert to benefit the Alliance to Save Cleveland High on Friday, April 3rd. Doors open at 9pm at The Wedge, 442 Bates at Virginia. $7 cover. Located just off Grand Boulevard at 4352 Louisiana Avenue, Cleveland opened in 1915 and served the Dutchtown neighborhood for over ninety years before being shuttered by the St. Louis Public Schools in 2007. All proceeds from the show will go to the Alliance to support its efforts to reopen this invaluable neighborhood resource as a school once more. Landmarks is particularly excited to be holding this event at The Wedge, Carondelet's newest restaurant and music venue and part of the Grand-Bates Suburb Historic District which is headed for the National Register. Join us for a night of great music to support our city's historic architecture and the people and institutions which bring it alive![/img]

This sounds like a great show at a great new place. I had some pizza from the Wedge about two months ago and was blown away. I don't say this lightly as I am 1. very serious about food, and 2. not really that interested in pizza: theirs is good. Pretty good rehab job as well, though I wish they would open up the storefront again and get rid of that crappy corrugated infill. The building itself was built in 1886 as a store along the busy farm-to-market route of Stringtown Road (now Virginia). The proprietor at the time was Hartmann Mueller. The building has changed hands many times since then, but has spent most of its life as a tavern. Nice to see it still being put to good use.

And we should all be very happy it is still in good use, because QT was interested in the site in the mid 1990's.

^ =D>

and I've been meaning to check out the Wedge. Next Friday is as good a time as any.

On a sidenote it's too bad the name Stringtown Rd. didn't stick. I like the state streets, but Stringtown would be a great name for a neighborhood or business district.

It is a great name, but I doubt you would be in favor of the reason it was called that if considered in a modern context. Stringtown is a name that was essentially derived from the fact that the road developed as what today would be analogous to a strip mall! The established farm to market use and the fact that it was graced early on by mass-transit (omnibus, cable/grip car, electric streetcar) ended up causing linear development along its length through areas that were otherwise rural in nature. Its name literally refers to the fact that there was a long, narrow thread of development along the route, running through farms, nurseries, orchards, which people referred to as a "stringtown."

/and knowing is half the battle.

I think that it is great that Landmarks Association is making a concerted effort to reach out to young people in the city. The organization has been around for fifty years at this point and has probably been the most emphatic and authoritative voice speaking out in favor of historic preservation and sound urban planning the city has ever had. Unfortunately, like many non-profits, they are hurting for new, young members (under age 40 could probably be considered young in this context) who can help carry the torch into the 21st century. From speaking with people within the organization, I know that they are deeply committed to progressive urban policy and to creating a bright future for St. Louis. The staff is young and energetic, as is the new executive director, and through this type of event they are attempting to raise the organization's profile among young city dwellers. I would encourage everybody to come out on Friday.

Ditto what TGE said.

I will likely not be able to make it, but I am definitely going to try to.

Plus it's going to be a great show! Country and bluegrass, a great south city venue, and a great cause - what could be better!

So my Lyft driver to the airport showed me his crypto wallet with $44,000,000 value. He said he and his biz partners want to use it to turn Cleveland into an entertainment venue. He said there is about 6-8 groups bidding on the school. Yes I know you have many questions- why is a guy with $44,000,000 driving Lyft, idk

I wish I was that lucky, but good on him and his business partners for wanting to do something with Cleveland High School.

Could he even cash that out without tanking the market? I doubt SLPS takes crypto. Probably most contractors won't either. Maybe the Boring Company, but I don't see them doing anything useful here. (Their proposals are usually entertaining, in spite of the name. But I digress.)

The current market cap of Bitcoin (BTC) is about $615 billion, and the top 4 cryptocurrencies right now collectively have a market cap near $1 trillion, so to answer your question, yes, he could easily cash that out and it would barely make a dent. If his $44M in crypto is all in BTC, it's about 0.007% of all the BTC currently held right now. There have been a few instances of people moving more than $1 billion in BTC at a time.

A venue of that size at Cleveland High would be invaluable to the Virginia Ave and Meramec strips. Could definitely see a few bars and restaurants following this.

South St. Louis' Cleveland High School poised for redevelopment

Edit:  Goodco designated as developer.
The board for Land Clearance for Redevelopment Authority designated Chris Goodson and his firm Goodco LLC as redeveloper of the iconic castle-like building, just east of Grand Boulevard on Louisiana Avenue in St. Louis’ Dutchtown neighborhood.

^They seem to have done quite well with the old city hospital. I have a lot of hope about this.
