Oh, and I nearly forgot about the shiny concrete. Every artist's rendering must have shiny concrete.

All that shadeless concrete is going to be about 10,000 degrees on a normal St Louis July day.
I would guess that the glass wall encloses the overflow waiting line area? The line can get crazy on busy days going out into the park from the bottom of the Arch.

If I remember correctly, they took into account the lines of people buying tickets and going through security when designing the mezzanin. Also there was talk of expanding the availability of places to purchase tram and movie tickets to the Old Courthouse and via an app.

When I took the CityArchRiver construction tour in May, they said there would be an announcement about updating Peabody Plaza between Kiener Plaza and City Garden, presumably to connect the "hallway" along Market, and to be less forbidding and be more of an inviting bridge between Kiener and CityGarden to lure visitors further West into CityGarden. But now I hear it is off because the Peabody building owner no longer has it in their budget. It would now only happen if CityArchRiver is paying for it.
These photos of the MVVA model seems to show that the Peabody Plaza was part of the MVVA update plan. Does anyone know if CAR might pay to connect the wide sidewalk of CityGarden along market with the wide sidewalk of the new Kiener Plaza across the Peabody divide? Or do they at least remove the large turrets at the corners that effectively tell tourists to turn back now. Private Property.

I was downtown and took a couple of pictures of the Hallway along CityGarden, new Kiener Plaza, and current Peabody Plaza.

^ I really hope they can work out that Peabody Plaza re-do... having that continuity of the hallway for as long of a stretch of the Mall should be a priority for future improvements of that civic space. Hopefully they'll bring back that Gateway Mall Conservancy that was nixed for CAR.

They have the open space, so I hope they run some basic queuing calculations and account for the divest space required to screen guests where appropriate and provide sufficient table/seating on either side of the security checkpoint. During remodel, that would have made screening lines move significantly quicker.southcitygent wrote:If I remember correctly, they took into account the lines of people buying tickets and going through security when designing the mezzanin. thanks for sharing! I'm still a bit confused on what's opening when... I believe some of the Arch grounds are supposed to be open this fall but not sure how much... the day you don't have to go all the way down to Walnut will be a good day.jambo wrote:Snaps from the north end of the Arch grounds:
Also, the elevated walk makes me wonder what the cost would be say per 1000' to do an extension of say the Midtown or North Riverfront trestle where it might make sense.

Today's Post had an article about Arch Parking and the loss of the garage. I believe CAR and parking garages need to do a MUCH better job of labeling and directing visitors to garages for Arch parking. The Old Cathedral completely blocked off their parking lot to keep tourist out. It looked to me like visitors were driving through Lacledes Landing looking for the old Arch parking garage and ending up driving down the improved LKSullivan. Tourists coming down the stairs block traffic stopping all traffic or forcing drivers to take risks to get across the walkway between groups. Some park illegally along LKS. The brave park close to the water on the levee.
I think they can put tasteful signs up directing visitors to downtown parking garages. And they need tasteful but prominent Arch Parking signs. Stadium garage East is the closest now but has no sign indicating it is public parking for visitors heading to the Arch.
I realize the Arch web site has a link that shows where to park, but I'm guessing most visitors assume it will be obvious or will have signs directing visitors. I'll be visiting Philly in October, and I suspect I won't have a hard time wondering which garages are enticing Liberty Bell and Independence Hall tourists.

^ Between the permanent removal of that garage and the permanent removal of Washington Avenue, CAR sure did its darnedest to flat-line the Landing! Oh, and by marketing the 8th and Pine stop as the Arch stop (for now)...
The explorer's garden at the north Archgrounds will look nice, certainly, and I really do like the way it interacts with the Eads but it's still more passive greenspace in the place of connective infrastructure (looking at you, Memorial Drive removal...). During the design competition, there were some really great ideas for how to elegantly incorporate new parking to the north (I think it was SOM Hargreave who proposed a partially-covered bus vestibule and garage?!).
I have no doubts that when the first new development is proposed for the Landing, it will be more for parking than for people. I really wish though that the CAR plan would have called for removing I-70 and converting the depressed section into below-ground parking, with an updated north/south Memorial Blvd. above!

I saw mayor slay tweeted today that Convention center is getting a lot of looks for next year b/c of Arch, but I gotta say it's frustrating that we seem to have had very little by way of residential or corporate action attributable to the huge project to date. That wasn't supposed to be the case for the Landing and nearby properties But almost all the action is further west.

To what purpose was it even considered that Washington should be removed? I really don't get that. Are they also permanently closing Lenore Sullivan? Who hired these idiots? Why are we paying them? Can we redevelop their redevelopment as soon as they're done? Now? Better still?
- 1,044
Leanor Sullivan will only be closed for special events, however I fear these special occasions might be happening on a regular basis. I took a walk on the Eads bridge this week to see how the grounds are progressing and don't think the removal of Washington Ave is such a bad idea. The North Gateway as they call it will be beautiful and I believe will be drawing more people to this area from the south. It's much more attractive than a 4 lane strip of asphalt that Washington Ave provided. I also think visitors will be more compelled to park north of the bridge giving the landing increased foot traffic. One of stated goals of CAR was to increase traffic to the landing and Michael Van Valkenburgh have a good track record. Given the confines that we could not remove the interstate I feel they are doing a good job none the less. A year from now most people will be amazed at how great all the improvement will be.

^ there definitely is some great opportunity with that removal of the garage and there will be more incentive for folks to wander that way and explore and then find there way into The Landing for lunch or whatnot even if they aren't parking there. And if GRG can activate the trail a bit with their properties by the Eads that would be tremendous.... long term, I think doing something with the Laclede Power Building is key to really get things going along the north riverfront and make The Landing a bit more centered.
I guess my frustration was the fact that removing the depressed was a political non-starter but a legitimate argument was to be had in the removing raised section of freeway in favor of a blvd starting from an at grade intersection with Wash Ave/Eads bridge to the New Missiissippi River bridge connection. A much more doable and cost effective change while better connecting the landing back to downtown, to the convention center and near north side IMO. Any respectable traffic study would have shown minimal impacts and a slight increase in travel times, etc.
..
In other words, keeping the raised freeway in place impedes landing & north riverside much more in my thoughts and a huge missed opportunity on Slay and BoA part not too mention the region to make a fundamental, doable infrastructure change when it came to Arch Grounds..

I drove through day before yesterday and meant to comment that I was unduly worried about Leonor Sullivan. I guess I'm annoyed that this is deteriorating an already fragmented street grid. Washington didn't do a lot to connect Laclede's Landing to the Arch, but it did quite a bit to connect it to the rest of the city. It was far and away the simplest way to reach it by automobile. (There are and were others, but it was tricky. And I say this as someone who worked for a time in a hotel across the street from Laclede's Landing.) How many people will find their way down Chouteau? Or Carr? It'll probably be easier to get to if you're coming from the highway, but if you come by surface street that just looks a right mess. Still. The whole disconnected shuffle under the elevated section of 70 is a disaster. I see no good reason to sever Washington, but if the add decent signage and reconnect Lucas to northbound Memorial I'll consider withdrawing my complaint. But it really needs to be obvious how you get to the Landing from Washington. In the city. Not just from the blinking highway exit. And that's the problem with City/Arch/River as it stands. It makes getting from anyplace actually in the city to the Arch or the River just a bit less intuitive. (On other counts it seems okay. But street closures and that stupid flagpole . . .)
