I guess the only reasonable solution is to deconstruct the interstate, then the streets, rebuild a tree lined boulevard, then run out of money before reinstalling the interstate.

Is there any possibility this is significant enough to buy enough time for a legitimate conversation on interstate removal? Moderate or severe damage to the interstate deck would already cost millions to repair and could take a month. I'll be happy if it just furthers the conversation.

I don't think there are any known problems with the highway at this point (at least announced publicly) 

They are just trying to fill in the hole properly now

There is also a $42M+ rehabilitation project planned for 2030 on that bridge...
That same amount of money would be at least cover bridge demo, design, and a chunk of surface boulevard construction in another reality 😉

I see the police have issued multiple warnings about gawkers and even people trying to enter the site.

I commuted down Tucker from MLK to Lafayette this evening. It was noticeably heavier than normal but not too terrible.

Jefferson today was TERRIBLE from Chouteau to Cole.  Basically crawled the whole way.  This was my preferred commute to Earth City to avoid slow down at the 44/55 merger through downtown (when 44 was open).  Today was the first day I would say commuters used it and it took me 20 minutes to get to 70 via Jefferson, and also back home.  I will look for a different route tomorrow.  Nearly doubled my commute.

So as a person who has to go from south city to north city close to downtown.  Sorry, I do not want 44 removed.  Bury it if you like from where it is underground on the south side to where it is on the north side, I do not want a 45-50 minute commute each way to work when I am being told to be in the office when I was also forced to leave downtown for Earth City,  I am nearing 55 and the odds of me finding a job now that pays what I make is rare, when I plan to retire in single digit years.  

So venting, as it was just a terrible and unexpected change to my commute that I tolerated as of late.

Fair. I figured the South City to North County connection would be the biggest issue.

I wouldn’t worry though. If they ever move forward with a project on this section of 44 they will find an alternative. Either underground or a better connection in Illinois for 70/64. I personally prefer the 70/64 interchange in Illinois. You’d very briefly pop into Illinois to go around downtown but it wouldn’t add much of anything to this commute.

This also is a 10+ year project. I imagine well beyond your retirement plan.

If they were to move forward with removing 44, which does need to happen, there would still be a 4 lane boulevard at least that would carry significant daiiy traffic. So what's happening right now is not an accurate representation of what traffic patterns would actually look like. Lots of people who right now may be using Jefferson or Tucker would instead be using the new street-level boulevard.

Cincinnati receives $25M federal grant to cap its expressway that divides its central downtown from the riverfront and stadium district. Very comparable expressway to I-44

If you have big vision, you get rewarded. These projects are out there for the taking

Well the mayor said absolutely nothing regarding I-44 and there were plenty of people whining that they couldnt drive their death machine through Downtown so I wouldn't expect anything anytime soon. This mayor would 100% side with commuters instead of what's best for the city if pressured.
