From today's Post Dispatch. I did not realize this was that extensive of a project or that they plan on tearing down part of the complex.

I wondered when this would be coming. I recently had family stay at the Cheshire and kept thinking the place needed a heavy duty remodel. It's pretty clear the whole complex is stuck in the 1970's.

The Streetside and Cheshire Inn topics have been split.

You can find information pertaining to Streetside and the new Mexican restaurants in the St. Louis County Forum.

Thanks

Cheshire Inn gets new owner

By Joe Whittington

ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

04/26/2007

He has done it again.

That whirlwind who goes by the name of Lester Miller is buying the Cheshire Inn & Lodge, the landmark concern that straddles Richmond Heights and St. Louis at 6300 Clayton Road.

And Miller may not be through passing the cash around.

When asked whether he had heard that West Port Plaza was coming back on the market, he replied, "I'm happy to hear that. Maybe I'll send a proposal."

Bob O'Loughlin, president and chief executive of Lodging Hospitality Management, previously had rolled out plans for a $10 million renovation that included European-style shops and a restaurant by Tom Sehnert, owner of the upscale Annie Gunn's in Chesterfield.

That plan seems to be out the window.

"I've got the Cheshire under contract and am going to close on it," said Miller, the multimillionaire owner of Busch's Grove and Lester's Sports Bar & Grill.

"I do everything with cash, and, you know, it's not a horse, so you don't have to feed it," Miller said. "When I close, I will find out what to do with the property. Whatever I do will be something St. Louis will be proud of."

Miller bought the property from the Dan Apted family.

"I guess I'm just faster than other people," said Miller, 75, who just returned from an exclusive Mexican resort where he hosted more than 100 friends and relatives for four days.

If Miller is interested, he might be able to put out a proposal for West Port Plaza, the 42-acre mixed-use project that was purchased in 2004 by a partnership of Golub & Co. of Chicago and Investcorp of New York. They paid $60 million for the properties.

Talk is that Mike Hanrahan and Paul Hilton are helping handle the deal for Colliers Turley Martin Tucker, partnering with an East Coast company.

The office space, said to be at more than 90 percent occupied, is leased by CB Richard Ellis.

"Bob O'Loughlin tried to buy West Port (where he has offices) before, but the other group offered more," said one local developer.

Maybe he'll have another shot at it.

If thats true, it's good news. That guy has really deep pockets and a visionary to boot!

Who is he. I've never heard of him before Busch's Grove and now Cheshire.

He founded a plastics(?) company and sold it about 7-8(?) years ago. He's probably worth a couple hundred million.

Lester Miller drops out of Cheshire Inn bidding

By Joe Whittington

ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

05/17/2007

Business columnist Joe Whittington

(Post-Dispatch)

It would appear that Ping-Pong ball known as the Cheshire Inn is back on Bob O'Loughlin's side of the net after Lester Miller called Wednesday to say he's dropping his offer to buy the hotel.

"I'm walking away from the Cheshire Inn deal," Miller said. "I still have 30 days of exclusivity that I paid for, but I've decided to not pursue the investment."

Before Miller came in with an offer that reportedly blew away O'Loughlin's by millions, the Lodging Hospitality Management president and chief executive O'Loughlin had announced a $10 million renovation deal that included a restaurant by Annie Gunn's owner Tom Sehnert and European-style retail shops.

"I just called my attorney and then Dan Apted (Cheshire owner) and told him I was dropping it," said Miller. "Anything that I have done I tried to do well for St. Louis, and I don't like what they're saying about Busch's Grove."

He agreed that one situation doesn't have anything to do with the other, but it was evident that he was stung by rumors circulating that he would turn the Ladue restaurant into a catering and party venue. He has always said it would remain a restaurant.

"Somebody just called in to a radio show and said I ruined Busch's Grove," said Miller.

O'Loughlin and Apted didn't return phone calls seeking comment.

It also was reported recently that Miller, a multimillionaire, filed for divorce from his wife of nine months, Lisa Alexa Miller, on May 2.

If Lester walked away from this because some one called a radio station and complained about him - good riddance! That's super-weak.

And I believe Les took out a full-page ad in the Post after our friend Mr. Bonwich gave Busch's Grove a less than stellar review after it opened.

That's pretty thin skin for someone with mega-bucks. I guess the guy in The Graduate was right about plastics being the future.

It's too bad the plans for the Cheshire are going nowhere, but given recent events surrounding Mr. Miller, I'm not surprised.

1. Love the Kanye West song. She gonna leave your ass, she gonna leave with half! 314, if you haven't heard it, they riff 'I Got A Woman' by Ray Charles, it's a very fun song.

2. Great article by Joe. I don't much spend any time in the county, 'cept to work...but your review made me want to check the place out. I hope they open a place downtown.

3. Sad to hear that Lester Miller is dropping the Cheshire. I think he would've done a good job.

It would seem like no other place is a better candidate for new ownership than the Cheshire. I personally don't even have the place on my radar screen any longer....for a number of reasons.

Wasn't there something in the paper about Miller being involved with the restaurant in the ground floor of the Adler Lofts? Across from 2020 Washington.

from Joe Whittington's Post column (11-08-2007)

AND THE WINNER IS:

After being pursued by at least two suitors, the Dan Apted family says it is ready to spruce up its aging Cheshire Inn and Lodge.

The lodge, opened by the Apted family on Dec. 31, 1964, had been in the sights of Bob O'Loughlin, president and chief executive of Lodging Hospitality Management, and restaurant owner and multimillionaire Lester Miller. O'Loughlin had envisioned a $10 million renovation at the 6300 Clayton Road site, which included tearing down the restaurant and building "Schneithorst-type" shops around it.

O'Loughlin's plans also included a restaurant by Tom Sehnert, who owns the upscale Annie Gunn's. "Bob is a great guy, but we just couldn't get on the same page," Apted said about one of those deals. "It was probably more my fault that his." Miller, who owns Busch's Grove and Lester's, then swept in with what was described as a staggering offer, only to renounce his interest shortly afterward.

Apted says one of the most important improvements in his plans will be to find an operator for the Cheshire Inn Restaurant, which closed in 2006. "We're talking to a couple of operators for a restaurant, and would like to have a place like Cardwell's or Annie Gunn's, something other than a chain look," Apted said. "I've got to respect Bob and Sehnert's friendship, and I couldn't go to his (Sehnert's) door."

The 106-room facility is undergoing a $1 million garage and pool deck renovation, something some have said would have to be done if it were going to be sold. The popular Fox & Hound Tavern will be refurbished with new furniture and a new winter drink menu and four nights of piano music by Dick Zelle. A high-end jewelry and wine shop called Wimby's also is planned.

Have things changed?
