JFC happened again
...and that is why I stopped biking to work. Not worth the risk.

^ same. i was almost killed in just such an incident on Shaw. thinking about how close i came to death still make me anxious.
I too was nearly killed in that manner. I was turning right at a 4-way, couldn't see to the right much due to a building, so I was slowly approaching the turn. Two cars came racing from my right to left, one passing the other in the oncoming lane, barreling through the stop sign at 50mph.
I constantly waffle between the two biking options here: scary bike lanes on stroads like Lindell/Choteau/etc., or quiet side streets with the occasional car going 50 through a stop sign.

In my case, biking to work was only practical by taking Chouteau (otherwise it would not be feasible time-wise), and I had way too many close calls over there, especially cars driving on the bike lane and almost hitting me from behind (!)
When someone goes through a stop sign at full speed and causes an accident, that should be an indication that they should never be trusted to drive again. Reality is, however, that they are probably already back on the road subconsciously looking for someone to kill.
I'd like to know how fast that first car was going. Had to have been 50+ mph. And I'll take a wild guess they hadn't bothered to stop at other stop signs in the stretch of Cherokee.
Sad thing is knowing City police, they gave them a stern talking to. No tickets, no law repercussions. Probably uninsured.

^ did the driver of the t-boned car even survive? they got nailed in the driver's side door at like 50–60 MPH.
The father of one of the passengers that got t-boned on Saturday emailed me this afternoon with an update:urban_dilettante wrote: ↑Apr 11, 2022^ did the driver of the t-boned car even survive? they got nailed in the driver's side door at like 50–60 MPH.
The driver is in the ICU with five broken ribs, a small skull fracture, and a brain bleed that should be 100% recoverable. They're monitoring his neurology very closely, and SSM-SLU is a level 1 trauma center, so there's really no better place to be. The other two, including ours, walked away shaken but mostly unhurt - a bruise from the seatbelt here, a couple of cuts on the knee there.
Jeesh. It's a miracle that no pedestrians were struck-- LoFi Cherokee was happening and the street was packed with pedestrians from end to end-- if this had happened an hour later in the day when the bands were performing on our end of Cherokee, it could've been a catastrophe.

^^I'm so sorry you have to put up with this. I'm so sorry we all have to put up with this. People driving like that terrify me, and I'd guess I see it weekly at least. (The scary awful driving, that is. I see the aftermath of the wrecks less often, but still too often.)

^^Well said to Richard Bose, Jeff, and Randy.
^My condolences to the family of the fellow who was hit on Manchester. That road needs a serious diet.
So many of our roads do.

Not sure what that does to our issue- lack of cars in city center

^Removing parking spaces and traffic routes would at least help to conceal the problem somewhat. It wouldn't increase the number of cars any, but it could concentrate them into a smaller area. And they you could start implementing the other stuff when numbers start to creep back up thanks to more people and stuff occupying spaces previously reserved for absentee car-lords.
