In all seriousness, what's a rookie alderman to do? For the most part, aldermen are customer service representatives, doing the job for ward residents that by all rights should be handled by people at city hall. You shouldn't need an alderman to help you get a city service.

I've heard people say it is who you know not what you know. Maybe this is evidence:Florida, a Democrat who has long discussed a possible challenge to Reed, filed the paperwork this week with the Missouri Ethics Commission. A formal campaign announcement isn't expected until August.
Florida is married to Steve Gregali, a special assistant to Mayor Francis Slay.
And remember, you can't vote on this stuff unless you live in St. Louis. The other "St. Louis" that exists in the imagination west of Skinker is not allowed to put their money where their mouth's are on this vitally important stuff. Get engaged and vote, St. Louis! May the best candidate win.

Do some aldermen in north city do not like Slay so much they don't want to be seen with him? Or is it for political reasons in there wards. If so why is Slay so hated in north city?
If Florida wins, would the Ward 15 seat be vacated? I know currently read serves independently of a ward, but I also know there were alderman seeking to change that.
In a silly way I'm disappointed this is happening already. Scott Ogilvie has inspired me to consider public service, specifically as an alderman, but I'm not at a point in my life or residence where I'm ready (in my own judgement or the law, I believe), but I think there's a high chance I will settle in TGS for the long-term, so this could be the ward I'd have chosen to do it.
Of course, who knows what will happen when the number is cut in half anyways.

I think it's political reasons. A way of showing a certain group is sticking together.Redbrickcity wrote:Do some aldermen in north city do not like Slay so much they don't want to be seen with him? Or is it for political reasons in there wards. If so why is Slay so hated in north city?
South City and North City historically vote for opposite candidates in City-wide elections. Slay is from the now nascent Labanese machine in mostly white South City, while his opponent is normally someone hailing from or hoping to appeal to black voters in North City. Normally, to win the mayoral election, you need to have stable turnout in "your" wards while winning the more diverse wards in the central corridor. Slay has been successful in that regard.

Great stuff in here. Think critically and vote regularly. These are the people making big decisions. I really wish all the smart, outspoken people on this board lived in St. Louis and could vote/run for alderman.

If this was a couple years from now (presuming I remain in ward limits as I think I'm likely to do), I'd be all over this. But now's not my time.
Hope we'll have someone great take this on, though.

Isn't the intersection of Roger and Wyoming in TGS/Ward 15?
To those of you in Tower Grove South, don't forget to vote in the special election for your new alderman in the 15th Ward tomorrow!

^ did my duty.
It will be interesting to see if there is another Independent sitting on the BoA. There are two seemingly strong independent candidates but they could possibly cancel each other out resulting in the Dem candidate winning.

With Megan Green winning last night in the 15th Ward special election, we now have two independents on the BoA. (At least until April, when there is another election.) Interesting to see both independent candidates got more votes than the Democratic candidate.
The two independents got about 85% of the vote with the Democrat at 10%.roger wyoming II wrote:With Megan Green winning last night in the 15th Ward special election, we now have two independents on the BoA. I think both of the Independents were (I) because of a technicality, when i talked to Green at the CTM annual meeting, she said she is a democrat. Lewis Reed was helping Green with her campaign.
I would imagine something along the lines of that the democratic committeeman and woman chose someone that Reed didn't want in the seat, so he supported an "independent," who is basically a Democrat.

There were no primaries, both Green and Symthe wanted the Dem nomination that went to McDaniel.

Missy Pinkerton-McDaniel, the Democrat in the election was the Committee Woman. So she basically chose herself with the consent of the Committeeman. Technically, the central committee (all the ward committee people) choose the democratic candidate, but always defer to the wards two committee people. If she chose herself and the committee man chose someone different the the central committee would have decided.Ebsy wrote:I would imagine something along the lines of that the democratic committeeman and woman chose someone that Reed didn't want in the seat, so he supported an "independent," who is basically a Democrat.
Megan is/was vice president of the 15th Ward Democrats, so she has been active in local democratic politics.
