I have to agree with you there. I also struck me that they didn't quite put as much effort into the display either. I mean, come on, all they had in the second bedroom was a lamp! They had way more time to get up a decent display then some.

Then again, I suppose if you're looking to rent, I wouldn't look at too much more than the basics. And variety is nice; any units that can be built downtown is a plus in my book.

Yeah, I looked in at Dubliner's too...they're getting the wood paneling up. I wonder if they'll stain it darker?

I found it odd that they painted the brick walls white, obscured the cool-looking columns by painting them, and used off-white outlets/light switches/switch plates (kinda 80's looking). On the plus side, the west-facing views are really great.

I was wondering about the wood paneling at The Dubliner's as well.

When I was there on Sunday, the developer was there and I asked him why they painted the brick. He told me the walls were already painted and they couldn't get permission to sand blast them due to historic requirements. I think he also said something about problems with lead paint abatement.

I have to disagree with you two. I toured Bee Hat as well and I really like the apartments. I think the finishes give it a cool kind of rustic look. I think they will do very well with those rentals! :D

BEE-ING THERE: Call it a Hat trick. The 25-foot-tall neon sign hoisted Thursday at 11th Street and Washington Avenue downtown highlights the three features of the renovated Bee Hat building owned by Matt Burghoff: the Bee Hat lofts; Paper Dolls, an edgy contemporary clothing store; and the new Dubliner pub and bistro, which is set to have its grand opening Nov. 1. The Dubliner's partners are Eddie Neill, Patrick Russell, John Schreiner and Burghoff. The pub is open now with a limited menu but a full line of brews, including 11 on tap. Paper Dolls opened several months ago, and the Bee Hat Lofts are available for rent. If the silhouetted leaning figure in the sign looks familiar, think James Joyce, a well-known Dubliner.

Signs like these encourage people to check out the area who otherwise wouldn't. It says "This street has life. It's not scary."

The 45-year-old Burghoff, who was also developing the Bee Hat Building at 1021 Washington Avenue into 36 condos, is under indictment on federal charges of bank fraud, money laundering and violations of the Clean Air Act.

On Sept. 9, St. Louis County Circuit Judge Tom DePriest denied a motion to dismiss collection of the promissory note from 1405 Pine LLC, Burghoff, his wife, Carolyn Burghoff, and Thomas E. Howard Jr. The money was to be used in the Ford development.

So what's going on with the Bee Hat?

"We haven't been advised of any pending sale (of the Bee Hat Building), and would be interested in learning more about that situation," said Jack Spooner, Burghoff's lawyer.

"We haven't been notified of anything," Spooner said when asked whether Burghoff had been voted out of the Bee Hat LLC.
