I really don't visit Alton that much - about once a year, but there is no city in the metro that has a better natural setting - I always thought it had the potential to be something great.

So i am glad to see a downtown master plan getting underway - This could be very interesting

I like this concept. It's ambitious and could do wonders for Alton. Hope it works out

I would love to see a legitimate commuter ferry service operate between Lacledes Landing and Downtown Alton. Has that ever happened?

Would be difficult with the lock and dam.  That stretch is entirely commercial shipping traffic so it would be challenging to get priority use of the locks to make any route feasible.

I haven't been up to Alton in quite some time. Is there any movement on this or the other twenty-five buildings that the AltonWorks developers say they want to redevelop?

PostJun 17, 2023#10

Was able to answer this for myself.

A very short article from four days ago: 'Work on Alton's Wedge Innovation Center in progress'

https://www.thetelegraph.com/news/artic ... 150013.php

ALTON — Work is ongoing on East Broadway on sewer and water lines going to the Wedge Building.

East Broadway was closed Monday from Henry Street to East Third Street to allow for the work, which is part of the renovation of the Wedge and Elfgen buildings into the new Wedge Innovation Center.

The new facility will act as an "accelerator, incubator, co-working space and digital hub focused on impact innovation and specializing in livability, clean tech and climate tech to benefit everyday lives," according to AltonWorks.

The project will have numerous office spaces and will have a cafe in the former bank lobby. It is expected to be complete in the first quarter of 2024.

The AltonWorks website gives some insight into their ambition and goals. There are also a few renderings.

They claim they want to turn Alton into "a city of rooftops," citing the city's terraced downtown landscape, which provides each building and street with a unique view of the Mississippi River.

They also really want to see Alton revitalize its riverfront into a "natural outdoor attraction." They believe doing this would create major economic growth.

Looks awesome, although kind of funny to see the "natural outdoor attraction" riverfront being 50% parking lots.

^ I also like the green hue added to the asphalt as if they know how bad it is and are trying to cover it up for presentation sake. I guess it's better than making even more parking in downtown Alton. Maybe this will encourage infill of the existing parking holes downtown.

The developers don't seem to be pretending in any way that the riverfront in Alton is anything but bad.

From their site -

The Alton Riverfront is a rare natural asset at the core of our community. This treasure has the potential to become an outdoor recreation destination, a wonderful place for residents to enjoy, an attraction for visitors from around the country, and an economic driver, providing stability for generations to come.

A reimagined riverfront could connect historic downtown Alton to our iconic Mississippi River in a way that promotes active living, job creation, and lower greenhouse gases, and spurs investment into the region, while also adapting to the realities of nature. These aspirational ideas embrace the best of the Great Streets Program and demonstrate how transformational and inclusive big dreams could be for the entire community.

At AltonWorks, we believe the Alton Riverfront could create major economic growth if utilized as a natural outdoor attraction, rather than one that houses big businesses in big buildings that block the views and are surrounded by acres and acres of concrete parking.

Over the next few years, the City of Alton and its residents will have an important decision to make about its long-term use and how it intersects with the future of downtown Alton.
The vision for the riverfront is an aspirational idea, like the Wedge Innovation Center and other AltonWorks projects designed to change the trajectory of Alton and position the city as a community that can attract and retain residents from all economic, cultural and racial backgrounds to find a home in this great community.

Local company aspires to transform Metro East city's riverfront into 'the front door' of nation's next national park

AltonWorks, which was founded in 2019 as a social impact company designed to help revitalize Alton’s downtown business districts, aspires to transform the city’s riverfront into “the front door” of the nation’s next national park.
But don’t expect it to happen anytime soon; receiving national park status is a years-long process in which many city, state and local government agencies will be involved.

AltonWorks' proposed Great Rivers National Park, would encompass 135,000 acres of lands along 144 miles-long stretches of the Mississippi, Missouri and Illinois rivers. It is also proposing a redevelopment of Alton’s Riverfront Park, which would transform the area into a family-friendly outdoor recreation destination. “We tend to think of things as first, in ‘the dream phase;’ second, in ‘the planning phase;’ and third in ‘the implementation phase,” AltonWorks COO Kevin Carlie said.
“For the Great Rivers National Park, I would say that’s still in the dream phase, but you’ve got to start somewhere,” he continued. “When it comes to the riverfront, we’re still in the dream phase, and we’re moving to the planning phase.”
National parks are usually established by an act of Congress, although the president also has authority to proclaim national monuments on lands or waters under federal jurisdiction, according to National Park Service materials.
Before Congress establishes a new park, it needs information about the land and whether it meets established criteria, such as possessing nationally significant natural, cultural or recreational resources. This information is collected through a so-called reconnaissance survey, which officials said takes about two years to conduct.
If the area appears to have potential as a unit of the national park system after the survey concludes, Congress will authorize the gathering of additional information, like outlining park management options and setting park boundaries, before deciding whether an area should be added to the park service or whether some other action might be appropriate, via a series of congressional committee hearings, park service materials said.

while i beleive there should be significantly better marketing of this area as a destination for recreation and i support conservationefforts along this stretch of river, this is a national critical commercial corridor and a working river.  These things don't typically comport with national park status.

^I agree with that. I don't even think turning it into a National Riverway (similar to the Jacks Fork/Current River, Eleven Point River, Buffalo River) would even be appropriate since it has been so commercialized.

It looks like a 120-unit apartment complex is going to be built at this spot in downtown Alton.

It will be called the Lovejoy and will start construction in 2025.

^ In this article, which was posted a few days ago by beer city, it sounds like AltonWorks would like to add 500 units to downtown Alton "over the next several years."
