So this story is "The Comments Section is Negative?" Shocking, that.

I am of the opinion that the national park idea is a pretty cool one. But I guess those Illinois counties have a number of residents that do not have any interest in it.

I'm always for more parks but I guess they have to show some vision and convince the locals.

For reference, here is the national park proposal for Great Rivers National Park, which includes the Mississippi, Missouri, and Illinois Rivers.

If this ever came to fruition, St. Louis city wouldn't be the only metro municipality with a downtown riverfront national park; downtown St. Charles, MO and downtown Alton, IL would join that rank. Chesterfield doesn't have a downtown on the river, but they would have a national park within their borders.

This could be huge for St. Louis if it would ever happen.

Wouldn't this completely alter how the river is utilized for residential construction, commercial enterprises, and pleasure boating?   Is this where the resistance is coming from?

There are worries about new federal restrictions, but then there are also typical NIMBY worries like an increase in traffic.

Yeah, I was thinking about Fed restrictions.  I could see why giving up (substantial) control of your entire waterfront isn't resonating.

Was in Alton yesterday, the Wedge Bank Building (601 E. Third St) is currently under full construction. Will be a gem when it's finished.

If I had to live 45 minutes from downtown I'd pick Alton over Wentzville every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

I have felt for a long time that Alton is ripe for a "boom" it really has all of the elements that it needs to succeed but just lacking the momentum.

Cool old housing stock, river views, lots of haunted stuff. What more could you want?
