great idea to make this challenge a fundraiser for a charitable cause.
Though part of me wonders if the participants might need a fundrauser of their own after this is over

All agreed that Tiffany's slinger is better than last night's. The chili was more flavorful, and the potatoes were freshly cut. We had the option of hamburger, ham, bacon, or sausage. I got the bacon, great! The sausage was highly acclaimed too. The atmosphere was warm with friendly staff. The decor-- classic. Dark Side of the Moon on the jukebox was perfect. Tomorrow is Eat-Rite.

^ Good luck getting enough open bar stools at Eat Rite!
So far the best quote of the challenge was by our server at Tiffany's. She is the one in pink behind the counter. After taking all of our orders, she commented "Good to see you guys are going healthy and all getting wheat toast"
3 down, 4 to go. Eat-Rite today. I had my slinger with sausage, which was good. The chili was a bit runny. Way to many onions. They were like kryptonite to me, so I came in a distant last. Great atmosphere. Excellent character among the staff. And I got to see a sweet train going up to the MacArthur Bridge. City Diner is tomorrow.

City Diner tonight. The waitress was cool. Nothing special about the slinger except that it came in a bowl. THe chili was a bit too tomotoey; I prefer a meatier chili. Some of us ordered extra onions which were undetectable. Great shakes though, people ordered banana, oreo-banana, oreo-hazelnut, and raspberry-hazelnut. Tomorrow is Courtesy.

Are there any OT Hodge's still operating? We keep getting conflicting reports.

Godspeed to you all.
At this time, let me direct everyone to the Wikipedia article on the Slinger, with all its derivations and a gorgeous picture of a Yin Yang at I believe the Tiffany. My mouth is seriously watering (and stomach getting scared) looking at it.

Focus: Best is the Toby at the Tiffany, with black coffee and Johnny Cash splitting time with Frank Sinatra on the jukebox

Going Thursday to introduce 2 of my interns to the Slinger. They were both raised in the burbs so have never even heard of Courtesy Diner.
OT Hodges used to have a dish that I loved called the OT Special. It was two cheeseburger patties, hash browns and spaghetti covered with chili, cheese and onions. YUM!
Also: If you go to southern Ohio/Northern Kentucky they serve Cincinnati style chili. It is different in that it uses less tomato sauce and chili power. Instead they use tomato paste, allspice and cinamon. The popular chains are Gold Star and Skyline. It has a different, less spicy flavor. Great stuff.

quincunx wrote:2 to go. Today Courtesy DIner on Kingshighway. Unfortunately the team couldn't all go at the same time. My slinger was top knoch. The other guys got jalapenos on theirs; they weren't too spicy. I even managed to get a napkin in the photo.
Jalapenos on a slinger? Ouch. That just sounds (and smells) like trouble. How is everyone's digestive system holding out?
I remember in college we did a contest once or twice to drink 100 beers in 100 hours. (It's a lot tougher than it sounds.)
But another time we did a variation on that since there was a White Castle right behind our apartment: 100 whiteys in 100 hours. I still can't decide which was worse for my system.

I concur. Now I'm craving Cincinnati chili. Hey, thanks a lot!

I made a batch last week and ate it all in two days. I finally found a recipe that seems pretty close to Skyline/Gold Star. It calls for boiling the beef in beef stock instead of browning it as normal. Helps get it to the right consitency and moisture to soak up all of the spices.
Billie's Diner today. We had some trouble because they stopped serving breakfast at 10:30am. They made an exception. The waitress was totally into what we were doing and even comped us the drinks. We were pretty excited that it came with Texas Toast. Unfortunately it was the worst slinger so far. It was massive. No cheese. I guess I was supposed to ask. The sausage was undetectable unless you pulled it out and ate it separately. The chili was terrible and there was a lot of it; very dry. The place is really cool. I will definitely be back; just not for the slinger. We finish up tomorrow at Uncle Bill's

Pretty well considering. Those onions at Eat-Rite made me burp all day Sunday.
The evening crew went to Hammerstone's yesterday and reported that the slinger was great. Lucky for them they didn't get the punch in the stomach that the rest of us had at Billie's.

some people really like Billie's Diner. I just found it to be very bland food, didn't have the slinger--just a traditional 2 eggs hashbrowns and bacon breakfast. But the people there are so very nice it almost makes me want to come back again anyway.

My in-laws always want to drag us there. I don't get it either. I've found that the food alternates between bland and greasy, and sometimes it's both. I know I'm supposed to expect and accept the latter quality to some degree in a diner, but everyone's got their limits. In fairness, though, I must say that Billie's offers the quintessential diner experience, as service is always very efficient and very friendly. So I'll go once in a while, but I'm pretty picky about what I'll order there.
Based on the group's experience so far, I think the next time I brave a slinger it'll be at Tiffany's in Maplewood.
quincunx wrote:Last one! We went for breakfast at Uncle Bill's. Going for breakfast was a bad idea. Our bodies just weren't prepared for the slinger. Everyone had a tough time. It didn't help that the slingers were huge and horrible. The chili was mediocre, and the burger seemed to hsave been cooked long before.
Congrats on pushing through the pain! I assume the next week will be spent on a diet of oatmeal, veggies and fruit?
I've never liked Uncle Bills chili and their burgers are always bad. Bill's would be one of the last places I'd go for a slinger. I'm not blaming you for going since the place is a late-night legend. But if I've been drinking and have a hunger for a slinger: I'll wait 30 minutes for a table at Courtesy before going to Bills.
