Unless I missed it it doesn't say where or when.
The new building will support the Sam Fox School's vision for integrated education by creating spaces that facilitate collaborative thinking, cross-disciplinary teaching, and the development of knowledge and solutions through innovative research and creative activity. The facility will accommodate new and expanded degree programs for graduate art and architecture students, and encourage connections both within the school and across the university.

I love this line:

"an iconic symbol of the university's commitment to creativity and technology in the 21st century"

Sounds like we'll be getting something quite different than the usual Collegiate Gothic architecture. Can't wait to see the renderings.

They get to build what they want. Another concrete box with a couple windows, yippee!

Sam Fox, the man himself, has to be one of the most arrogant SOB's I have ever met in STL. Just sayin.

I like that the Arts & Architecture corner of campus has maintained a commitment to avant garde architecture (even if it doesn't turn out to be the most aesthetically pleasing). Wash. U.'s collegiate gothic approach has made for a great campus. But it's important to let the art students know that their creativity and inventiveness are encouraged not just in the classroom, but also in practice.

How about Wash U stepping out of their comfort zone and building something spectacular in Grand Center? Where their students can be surrounded by art and architecture. Just thinking aloud.

I just heard that Wash U will be holding a design competition to chose the architect of the new building. No Collegiate Gothic here.

The three finalists for the design of the new building have been announced, and will be giving presentations this month. No renderings yet, but it won't be long now:

KieranTimberlake of Philadelphia has been named architect of the new building (Weil Hall). They've done many prominent projects around the world, including the new US Embassy in London. This is gonna be a great building.

The Business Journal posted a 'subscriber content' article on this 6/12. Can anyone with access check if it includes a rendering/concept drawing in there?

It does not include a picture or rendering. Just a photo of the couple funding it.

^ I believe the Weil's live high up in the Chase.... I wonder if they'll be able to see what they are helping to fund from up there.

^ Very cool stuff!

Here's the timeline: The university will finalize designs for the transformation of the east end
of campus by 2017 and will begin construction in May 2017 with completion in May 2019.

How does this impact the rest of the Engineering Quad and finishing out the rest of that campus?

^ With a new dean of the school of engineering, I wouldn't doubt that the vision for the engineering campus has changed as well.

From the P-D article:
Parking will still exist but it will go underground, reached by ramps from Forsyth and Forest Park Parkway. Vehicle capacity will be cut to 790 from what until completion of Hillman were 1,100 surface spots because of what the university said is the dropping demand for campus parking.

The number of parking permits bought by students, faculty and staff on the Danforth campus has fallen from 5,659 passes in the 2007-2008 academic year to 4,543 permits this year.

The decline, largely the result of lower car use by students, can be explained by changing attitudes about driving and the university’s provision of free Metro passes to students and employees, officials said. MetroLink’s Skinker station is at the northeast corner of the Danforth campus.

The garage, to be built first, will provide access to the basements of all four new buildings and might someday have a much different function.

Officials said the garage, under design by BNIM Architects of Kansas City, will be built so that if demand for parking continues to drop at least some of the space could be renovated as laboratories or even classrooms.

This was an interesting little tid-bit in the P-D article:

"Opened 13 months ago six blocks north in the Delmar Loop is the first phase of The Lofts at Washington University, the school’s foray into new off-campus student housing. When completed in 2017, the $80 million project will accommodate 600 students."

I'm not sure that 2017 timeline for completion of Phase II of the Loop Lofts (Phase I houses 400 students, Phase II will house 200) had been mentioned before. That would mean roll-out of a final design and groundbreaking probably in the next 6 months.

Love it. Did I hear Webster participates as well with the free Metro passes? Hopefully SLU will get on board soon, too.

Just wanted to it's nice to see more biz coming to the general Skinker/FPP area.... Snarf's is coming to the renovated Wash U-owned apartment building on Skinker just north of FPP where the Saint Louis Public Library's Charring Cross branch is.

Looks like a construction fence has gone up around Givens Hall.
