What is going on with this? I hear it is the World's tallest fountain. Were there not plans to do more around it? One would think tourists or locals might want to see the World's tallest fountain. Can we all get mint julips or Bud Lights or something nearby while we stand there waiting for it to go off like Old Faithful? I'd pay to see that up close.

I'm not sure, but heard it's to be sponsored by Viagra. Maybe they'll have a tent nearby.

You are referring to the Gateway Geyser, the world's tallest fountain.

Cargill is an admirable company, but I don't think they have anything to do with this.

IIRC, it was some rich(?) guy who decided he wanted to build a giant fountain and then went ahead and did it.

You're right, it was Malcolm Martin. He just recently passed away.

Good intentions, bad idea.

Mr. Martin would have had a greater impact on downtown by instead donating the money that he put towards the geyser to the St. Patrick's Center or by renovating a vacant building.

Fair enough. I just assumed it was. You know what they say...

I have no problem with the Cargill family, but that plant across the river is THE biggest eyesore for peopl in St. Louis looking across the river. OUr recmption/lobby faces the arch, world's tallestfountain, and Cargill. It's embarassing when people come in from out of town and that's the view they get.

So you want Cargill to move just because people don't like the view? Tell your out of town guests to look the other way! 8)

Why don't we convince Cargill to move its facility to somewhere in Missouri - that way, we get their tax dollars and we don't have to look at it!

I of course know that my opinions on the view don't mean anything -- it's just a pet peeve of mine and goes to the idea of the other side of the riverfront - what most visitors to the city see - is such an eyesore.

I have a feeling that if this were to actually happen we would just have to look at the decaying ruins of the old Cargill facility for years to come.

After they move, we could declare war on Illinois, blow up the building, and then sign a truce.

I think that if someone in Las Vegas had put in the World's tallest fountain, people would take their kids out of school and plan vacations around going to see it.

But here it is almost unknown. You wonder why Illinois can't link the casino area, casino hotel, the fountain, riverboats, and a landscaped area with outdoor dining restaurants and an Arch viewing plaza into some kind of destination. Someday they should look into building a new arena across from the Arch and getting an NBA team.

Huh???? Why on earth would they do that when the Scottrade Center already exists?

Attract people? The Scottrade Center is just getting older and isn't attractive to the NBA, apparently. Why is Indianapolis building a new domed Stadium -- they have the RCA dome. Why did Detroit build a new Domed Stadium? Why did Indianapolis build a new arena -- they had the Market Square Arena. Oklahoma City had an arean, but got the NBA's attention when they build a 2nd better one. As I said above, I think -- someday -- the East Side across from the Arch is a good place to build an Arena.

Scott trade was built in 1994... Barely 10 years old. Its not brand new but its hardly old. By the time we get considered for a NBA team -- maybe it will be a bit older and they will require a new one... but frankly it’s much more likely to dump a few million into upgrading the new one. Especially when SLU already started construction on a new arena already.

Scottrade is great... I don't think the NBA would require much in order to move in there.... the problem is with getting a NBA franchise is two fold: can St. louis support another sports franchise, and is there an owner who could lure one here. The next stadium to be replaced should be that GOD AWFUL EJ Dome...That has to be one of the worst venues in sporst. Not to mention, Football should always be played out doors in the elements.

Back on topic. I would be very discouraged if arena plans were ever discussed for the east side riverfront unless it's for an MLS stadium. What was the topic again.?
