I think that is how it is spelled. Maybe Wilco. It is a HUGE facility that hasn't been open for a while on Grand Avenue near the old Sportsman's Park. Has anyone ever made plans to redevelop here? The shell is still intact, but who knows what the inside looks like. How long has it been closed?

Not sure when Willco Plastics put their name on the extension, but the main building used to be Carter Carburetor's production plant. It was built in the 30's I believe and was shuttered ~1989. It's on the list of EPA superfund sites for cleanup due to PCB's.

It's currently for sale, but with said EPA cleanup requirements no one would be able to use it for quite some time. I know Herbert Hoover's Boys and Girls Club wants the land to extend their facilities.

It's a really nice building, but it's quite an eyesore. The current owner has ties to the Fiesta Corp and Crystal City Underground Sports Complex (owner Tom Kerr), which owns a large warehouse on North Kingshighway. As far as I know, this is the only building of his that isn't used (maybe due to the EPA problems).

It is apparently the most contaminated site in the city...

Maybe in terms of concentration... I really don't know. It's likely from PCB's in the concrete, asbestos, and heavy metals from metal treatments (chromium, zinc, etc). The EPA already cleaned up the north east corner that is now an empty lot owned by the LRA, which is used as a parking lot for events at the boys and girls club.

It isn't Times Beach contaminated or anything near that. It's one of those sites where as long as it isn't disturbed (as in razed) then it's not a problem.

Herbert Hoover's has the means to buy and raze the property, but the EPA superfund money isn't available until 2011 (I think).

Is this where the band got their name?

While that would have been really cool, it doesn't look like it. According to Wikipedia:

The group named itself "Wilco" after the CB radio voice procedure for "I Will Comply".

Sorry to go off on a tangent here, but Wilco is coming out with another album sometime this year. Can't wait. 8)

I wouldn't worry too much unless you plan to do some digging.

Cart Carb is coming down-

My guess is that there is way the building could be reused, its huge and in looks structurally sound but broken windows = OMG eyesore! needs to go! think of the children!
Honestly would probably make a great indoor storage facility, light industrial. Instead it will be a whole lot of landfill
