This is good news! But I can already hear the responses—

from Kielman: "More jobs won't save the metro. In Kansas City....."
from STLToday commenters: "Hope you like having your car broken into!"
headline from a forthcoming Bill McClellan article: "City's blue-collar heritage sadly turning white."

feeling snarky today. Must be the sunshine.

^ OMG, shhhh! I mean, if Well-Fargo just knew about the earnings tax they'd high-tail it to Chesterfield! Now everybody, just keep this quiet until all the people have moved from Minneapolis, then....BOOM! ($$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$)

^What these F'ing simpletons on StLToday don't realize is that even with the earnings tax, these employees are probably getting about a 3% bonus moving to StL. As someone who pays taxes in Minnesota, I can say with certainty that I pay SIGNIFICANTLY higher taxes than a StL City Citizen.

I can see how the Wells employees would LOVE being in the city. From a monetary standpoint they all get huge raises when they are transfered here in the form of state tax savings.

^ Not to mention the $1.06 they'll save on each pack of smokes! :)

^And about $0.50 a gallon on gas. Also, sales tax is %10 in downtown Minneapolis, which is awesome when you get lunch. The taxes here are literally insane. I can not believe anyone in StL has the gall to complain about taxes, let alone the measly 1% city tax.

Edit: Also, the tax that makes an $18 24 pack of bud light (ridiculous already, right?!) $21.50. That is really cool as well. Jesus, these transfers are going to be living the dream.

As a side note, I seriously need to move home already.

Believe the best part of the article is the last sentence

"Ludeman identified Minneapolis in August as a possible site for jobs that could move to St. Louis, in addition to trader jobs and IT and technical jobs from San Francisco, Seattle and New York."

I believe Minnesota is now rated 6th in terms of state tax burden.

^That sounds correct. I had heard 5th but it is right there either way.

^^^Nice, Shadrach

It strikes me that the only people who seem to complain about the earnings tax are people who have never had to pay it and have no interest in ever paying it. These same people are those (in my personal experience) who have never paid taxes anywhere else (ie never been out of Missouri). Why they spend so much time on something that doesn't affect them really amazes me, but that happens for any issue involving the city I guess.

Should change the state motto.

From "Missouri, the Show Me State," to "Missouri, the out-state hate."

Taxes are fine as long as the services you get back are worth it. I think the Twin Cities are doing just fine with their tax burden, I'm guessing because overall people think they're getting their money's worth. At the state level Missouri is a low-tax low-service state, but I think one of the strengths of the St. Louis region is a willingness to tax itself for a good cause: Zoo-Museum district, Metro, Loop trolley, etc.

Mid level jobs are looking to relocate from Wall Street to cheaper parts of the country. STL needs to be all over this.

Agreed - the entire region needs to capitalize on this. There's a lot of hidden financial tech expertise in St. Louis.

If Missouri Legislature has to vote on this, we really need to figure out how these bonds will help out Sedalia, Kirksville & Poplar Bluff. Otherwise this would be a gigantic waste of money by 12% of Missouri tax payers, just like the Cargo Hub idea.

^ I'm sure some ya-hoos in the legislature would like to put in a bill saying no state money if the company hires gays or atheists. They could also say that new hires have to live outside of StLC or StLCo and the City must pay for transpo costs into the post-apocalyptic hell-hole on armored buses with SWAT-trained security.

They should be using that money to rework their campus design. Talk about an eyesore. Their campus probably was dated within a decade of it being constructed. Total Disaster! That along with the AT&T building make for an extremely ugly Midtown.
