Washington University is so civic minded. Their taking space in CORTEX 1 could help expedite development of other CORTEX buildings. The sooner these buildings fill up the better. It would definitely bring St. Louis to the attention of outside developers and biotech firms.

Washington University Medical School has signed on as the second tenant in a new lab and office building in St. Louis for growing biotechnology companies.
The building, developed by the Center of Research, Technology and Entrepreneurial Exchange (CORTEX), will get under way Dec. 16 on Forest Park and Boyle Avenues. CORTEX is a collaboration of Washington University, Saint Louis University, Barnes-Jewish Hospital Foundation, the University of Missouri-St. Louis and the Missouri Botanical Garden.
The $36 million building, designed by Forum Studio with Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum (HOK) acting as design consultant, will be three stories and 170,000 square feet when completed in the fourth quarter of 2005. Clayco Construction is the general contractor.
The building is on the site of the former Markwort Sporting Goods Co. building on Forest Park and Boyle avenues.
