The U.S. Department of Labor published a map last week ballparking the average weekly wage in each county, and it doesn't look good for Missouri.

Yikes.

Is it just me, or are there far more "Lower than $587" counties in our state per capita than other states?

I'm trying to understand the interactive chart at http://www.bls.gov/opub/ted/2014/ted_20140718.htm

According to this chart, STL City has the highest wages in the state, even higher than STL county or St. Charles. I'm assuming from the site this is just for employed people. I'd like to know more about the methodology.

STL City: $1,031
STL County: $1,013
St. Charles: $762
Jefferson County: $631

One reason rural data is low is due to the prevalence of the self-employed and family farmers in rural America. The survey is based on government-mandated unemployment insurance data. From the technical data:

"Major exclusions from UI coverage include self-employed workers, most agricultural workers on small farms, all members of the Armed Forces, elected officials in most states, most employees of railroads, some domestic workers, most student workers at schools, and employees of certain small nonprofit organizations."
