It was reported by Joe Bonwich of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that Vin de Set is now open in the Centennial Malt House building...

What's opening or closing

By Joe Bonwich

ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

June 22

Up on the roof

Now open at the edge of Lafayette Square is the much-anticipated Vin de Set, Paul and Wendy Hamilton's spinoff of the popular Eleven Eleven Mississippi. A rehab of the landmark Centennial Malt House building at 2017 Chouteau Avenue ("Vin de Set" is a multilingual pun on "vingt dix-sept," French for "2017"), the restaurant's signature is a stunning 4,000-square-foot rooftop patio overlooking downtown.

Chef Ivy Magruder, formerly of Eleven Eleven Mississippi, oversees the kitchen, which features a southern-French influenced menu - "food and ingredients experienced in Provence while delivering it in a recognizable and approachable way," according to the restaurant's Web site - with entrees in the $17-$23 range. (Chef Bruce Piatek now helms the kitchen at Eleven Eleven Mississippi.)

Bill Kunderman, also formerly of Eleven Eleven Mississippi, put together the southern-French-themed wine list, featuring wines native to the region and international wines with the same grapes and styles as southern France.

Vin de Set is open for dinner only, 4-9 p.m. Sunday; 5-10 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday; 5-11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. For more information, call 314-241-8989 or visit http://www.vindeset.com.

I was there last friday, great space, cool bar with a small St. Louis statue along the back.. The food was also good, and the place was packed, the enitire patio was being used and we were forced to sit inside. The view is also very nice.

Tried to get reservations for tomorrow, all they had open was 10 pm. I guess we'll try another time.

...and the place was Awesome...I'll write a review in a different thread...

I was just wondering what the infill residential development is across the street. That would be at about 20th and Chouteau. (sp)

That's Lafayette Walk - it really seems to be coming along nicely:

One can imagine what that part of Chouteau will become in the next 1-2 years! I was skepical of the prices at Lafayette Walk but the development is really looking sharp...somewhat upscale.

I really want someone to develop that corner building at Mississippi and Choteau into a nice neighborhood bar/pub. If you'll put up the money, I'll do it.

I hear you - I'd really like to see someone fix up the old Eads House as well (on Chouteau, just east of Mississippi). It's a beautiful old home, but it looks like it's about to fall down.

I wonder how properties are selling down in that area... I am talking about the undeveloped ones...I wonder if folks are holding out much for the lake project...That could really boost prop. values...

Great dining experience!! Good food, good service!! I'd recommend dining inside in order to avoid a two hour wait to eat on the roof top patio, and then get drinks after dinner on the patio at the full service bar.

Per all the great reviews (and I'd like to think my recent recommendation for a good new place to check out), my parents went on Friday night. Both were impressed and thought it was great. Can't wait for a chance to go and hope the area continues to thrive.

We went about a month ago and LOVED it. The view of the Arch makes the whole experience/atmosphere wonderful and their wine list is awesome!

Okay...we went to this place a week or so ago. It was good but not a wow for us. My husband and I love food but have yet to be overwhelmed by a place in St. Louis. Can someone help us? Some of the places we have been are Vin de Set, Sydney Street, Mosaic, eleven eleven...at this point I don't care where it is located I just really want to have an amazing dinner.

Thanks!

Yes. We want to try Niche. I guess I should say we moved here from DC and may just be to picky. I want a memorable dinner that I can savor and remember the flavor of the rabbit, how the fish just fell apart, or the texture of the steak. Someplace I just want to go back to whenever I can. Wonderful wine list. I will give most of the places here the atmosphere and pretty good wait staff. We love to get to know a place and enjoy many visits.

I recommend Niche. It might not be the perfect experience you're looking for, but I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Wow. I went to Sydney St and had an amazing meal there.

Loved Niche. Great place.

From what I've bee told, An American Place is one of the best restaurants in the mid-west.

Try Giovanni's or Trattoria Marcella. King Louie's has been popular for years. Tony's is probably the top. Terrene is pretty good.

I think Tony's has been coasting for years. Still great service, but the food doesn't equal the price.

Goddammit...

STL Post-Dispatch: Overnight fire damages Vin de Set restaurant in Downtown West
  • The roof's outdoor area had a "heavy" fire that left a hole in the deck.
  • The rest of the building is relatively unburnt, including the third floor interior.
  • Smoke and water damage on floors 1-3.

Horrible.

I was just suggesting that place to someone that wanted a nice rooftop view of St. Louis.
