I saw someone asking about this site on TWT, is this building vacant or being used by the city?
Completely vacant as far as I know. Has been since like 2002. Didn’t become a big deal until Tishuara was mayor for some reason. At any rate, it’s an important vacancy we need to get redeveloped
Lots of things were not a big deal until a black woman who pushed against the establishment was mayor. It was a reoccurring theme.JaneJacobsGhost wrote:Completely vacant as far as I know. Curious if you have rumblings of what they could do with the parking lot?dbInSouthCity wrote: ↑8:41 PM - Oct 10I know the developer. I’ve been in some meetings. It’s a good plan
Thanks for the info.dbInSouthCity wrote: ↑11:11 PM - Oct 12Garage in the back lot on Clark and 14th
By chance any residential on top or maybe some street level retail along Clark to capture blues crowd/Enterprise Center Would be nice if something more to it.
It’s possible. Biggest task was getting the Treasurer on board and he’s on board. We’ll see what makes sense.
I should be clear I expected nothing more.dbInSouthCity wrote: ↑11:11 PM - Oct 12Garage in the back lot on Clark and 14th
Youd need a massive parking garage.addxb2 wrote:What should happen in two steps.

City Hall should never be moved from 1200 Market Street. That building was inspired by Paris’ city hall and is one of the best city hall’s in America. We should continue to invest in it and celebrate it by building up the area around it (like the second AI rendering above)
It probably needs $100M+ of investment to remain ADA compliant, address outstanding maintenance, energy efficiency, support modern IT, and be a comfortable and modern work environment that people deserve/expect. The building needs to be celebrated but the government, for its own preservations, needs something more manageable. A renovation of Wainwright would be a significantly lighter lift and City employees would provide a stable source of energy to this part of Downtown. A developer can preserve City Hall and give it a pathway to be celebrated. The City will never be able to celebrate the building when capital needs are pilling up. Who is going to invest in landscaping maintenance while City employees dodge leaks and visitors are stuck in elevators?
But yes, an alternative solution would be selling the parking lot and using that money to cover some of those expenses. It would be a small share of what is needed.
What would a private developer do with that building? It would most likely just sit empty like the municipal courts building. There has to be way to get creative with paying for the renovations. You could raise some private dollars from the business community, and if the city/county merger talks progress, the county could make it their HQ too in and help with the costs.
I too am not a fan of moving city hall anywhere else, though I understand the argument.
Moving the city offices at 1520 Market into the core of downtown should be done, however.

This is one of those buildings that, because of its prominence, will improve perceptions to visitors once fixed up.
It would be an incredible hotel and would be better managed architecturally. City employees would have a better and safer work experience AND the City would save money.
I was watching an obscure Chinese movie that was shot here in 2000 or so. It used the Municipal Courthouse as a location for exteriors, at least, and likely some interiors. (Also Old Courthouse, Lambert T2, the Lionberger House, the Landing, Mansion House I think, and a bunch of other places.) Anyway, short version: I look forward to whatever they do. That building is way too cool to be sitting empty.
Come on; you can't just throw out a line like this and not give us some more details. Enquiring minds want to know . . .symphonicpoet wrote: ↑11:44 PM - Oct 21I was watching an obscure Chinese movie that was shot here in 2000 or so.
It was called The Treatment, but it's also sometimes called The Gua Sha Treatment in English. It's . . . well . . . let's just say I don't think it will be everyone's cup of tea. But it was definitely fun seeing the locations. There's a low res capture on YouTube. (Looks to be a pirate version, honestly.) I'm halfway tempted to shell out for the DVD just to get a better copy, but it's mediocre at best, I don't speak Chinese, and I doubt there are subtitles. so I'd lose half the movie. It's . . . interesting? I'll go with interesting.
