I've definitely been pondering the degradation of our sense of community walking around our neighborhood these past few day. In McKinley Heights maybe only 1/10 houses have shoveled their sidewalk
I'm not really complaining (ok maybe a little), but just pointing out how difficult navigating the city streets can be even days after the snow stops falling. It has been a frustrating week for us, but life goes on. We've been on Cherokee Street for 15 years, so a little snow can't get us down! I agree there are much bigger things worth complaining about than snow, but it still greatly impacts small businesses.

As far as "sense of comminity" 3 complete strangers helped dig our my girlfriends car when it got stuck puling into a gas station.

I've been in Soulard 15 years and I've never seen Russell, 12th and 9th Streets (the three biggest commercial avenues in the neighborhood) look like this 5 days after a snow.
Is part of that due to unusual weather conditions like the sleet prior to the snow and the lingering below freezing temps? Sure. But it's still unusual for so many main streets to still be snow covered after so many days.
On the bright side the bars and restaurants that have been open seem to be doing brisk business with so many Soulardians staying in the neighborhood for a week. Some have had issues with employees being able to get to work however.

@Auggie and @Baltimore Jack cool down folks. this was a once in a decade snow storm which dumped tons of snow and city and county were caught off-guard which is due to them being unprepared.

A friend of mine from Portland has been in town all week- staying at the AC Hotel in the CWE. He moved here briefly in the early 2000s from Chicago when his girlfriend was in grad school at Wash U, so I asked him how he liked being back in the Red Brick Mama. He texted back (I literally copied and pasted his message): "Why does St. Louis hate pedestrians? Dressels was cozy. I am frustrated by the state of the streets and sidewalks. It’s so bad. How can they not plow all the lanes of Kingshighway ?? t’s garbage. I think it’s a lack of pride and respect"
That's the impression from a casual (and well-traveled) visitor, and I think it's pretty fair. I think there's room for improvement, that's all.

I've heard some say this is a "once in a decade" winter storm. But with climate change maybe we'll have these kind of large snow/sleet events more frequently.
If we do I certainly hope our region isn't crippled for a week once a year or even every other year.
And it would behoove all of our city, county, and state leaders to look at what happened this week and work to make response better in the future.

I am only saying the truth. The reality is that every major road is clear and has been clear for days. Idk about the highways since I don't use them regularly, but in south city where I am, literally every primary and even most secondary roads are clear down to pavement. Never been gaslit this hard in my life by so many people.
