St. Charles County plant touts expansion, aims to combat global semiconductor shortage
https://www.stltoday.com/news/local/stc ... -top-story
GlobalWafers Co. has completed a $300 million expansion of its O'Fallon, Missouri, plant, which produces wafers that are used in the making of semiconductors, chips and microchips for electronic devices. The company will soon start making larger wafers that can power everything from household appliances to cellphones and automobiles to aerospace technologies.
…………..
Hsu said her company's Missouri expansion and ongoing construction of two wafer manufacturing facilities in Texas would not "be possible without the passage of the CHIPS Act" — a law signed last year by President Joe Biden aimed at bolstering American semiconductor research, development and production by offering millions of dollars in manufacturing incentives and billions of dollars for semiconductor research.

They are still working a majority remote. I wouldn’t count on any new office space any time soon.

Or at least LHM can propose that secondary office overlooking the practice fields on the parking lot they own between the pitches and Union Station.  Believe WWT corporate HQ at Westport if not mistaken.   LHM could offer up a nice co share, part time office space with great transit and future Brickline access,. easy freeway access and walkable location to employees desired pro sports teams/event.

See what Debalivieara91 is saying but some form of hybrid WFH/Office seems to be coming more the norm.   ATT pretty much gone that route this month if not mistaken.  Not sure for St. Louis ATT based employees but my wife will have to do part time in office starting next week (she got reprieve for a few weeks due to office renovations)

Wasn't sure where to put this, but it's good to see a former local company bring their annual conference to the STL.
San Francisco tech firm bringing annual conference to St. Louis
Gainsight’s annual Pulse conference, which brings together customer success and sales professionals, is scheduled for May 14-16 at the America’s Center convention complex in downtown St. Louis. It’s the first time Pulse has been held outside of California’s Bay Area, said Gainsight Chief Marketing Officer Scott Salkin.

“Going back [to St. Louis] is a little bit of going back to our roots,” Salkin said. Gainsight, which provides customer success software, was founded in 2009 by St. Louis entrepreneur Jim Eberlin and Sreedhar Peddineni as JBara Software. It was the first investment of St. Louis venture capital firm Cultivation Capital, with other early investors in Gainsight including St. Louis Arch Angels and Missouri Technology Corp.
Gainsight, which was acquired in 2020 by Austin, Texas-based Vista Equity Partners for $1.1 billion, moved its headquarters to California in 2013. San Francisco-based Gainsight today describes itself as a “remote-friendly” company with locations in six countries. Gainsight has an office in St. Louis at 14500 S. Outer Forty in Town and Country, with more than 100 local employees, said Salkin. Gainsight has more than 1,200 employees globally.
Gainsight provides software designed to help companies better understand their customers and improve engagement with them to improve customer retention and product usage. The Pulse conference aims to bring together customer success and sales professionals from different companies, providing training and networking. The upcoming Pulse event in St. Louis includes programming on topics such as customer relationships and engagement, customer education, artificial intelligence, sales and leadership. The conference includes more than 70 workshops and sessions, along with 16 networking events. Pulse will include a party May 16 at The Armory in Midtown.
Salkin said the decision to bring Pulse to St. Louis comes as technology companies are no longer “centralized as they once were” in San Francisco and Silicon Valley, making a location like St. Louis more apt for the event. The selection of St. Louis for the Pulse conference will make it easier for travel, drawing a more geographically diverse roster of attendees, Salkin said. He said registrations are pacing ahead of previous years. Around 2,500 attendees are expected at the upcoming conference.

The local tech startup Intramotev deployed its retrofit technology for autonomous rail cars yesterday in Pennsylvania. It’s all over news outlets in the rail/mining/electric space. It’s a cool company.

St. Louis one of 10 U.S. cities selected to compete in $1M Startup World Cup
For the first time ever, St. Louis has been selected to serve as one of 10 US Cities to compete in the largest global pitch competition, the Startup World Cup.
Hosted in Silicon Valley on Oct. 2 through 4, 2024, the Startup World Cup convenes top startups from 70+ cities around the world to compete for a $1 million cash prize.
Partnering with some of the world’s largest conferences and tech events to host 70+ regional startup competitions for North America, Europe, Asia, South America, Africa, and Australia, the World Cup is hosted by Pegasus Ventures in San Francisco. The global conference brings together the top startups, VCs, entrepreneurs and world-class tech CEOs to support the high-profile pitch competition. Hosting 20+ speakers, 200+ international investors, and 2000+ attendees, the Startup World Cup serves as a global hub for high-growth startups.
2024 will mark the first year that St. Louis is invited to compete, being among only 10 U.S. cities in the global competition. The opportunity was born out of a collaboration between TechSTL and the Skandalaris Center at Washington University, presenting an incredible opportunity for St. Louis companies.
Emily Hemingway, executive director of TechSTL, said, “When we were presented with the chance to bring the Startup World Cup to St. Louis, it was a no-brainer. Our community is home to some incredible startups who are primed for the global stage. The invitation and launch window happened very quickly, but the team at TechSTL is working hard, even in the midst of STL TechWeek, to ensure that the program is executed with integrity over the coming months. We are rallying partners, judges, mentors, and industry leaders to support the 100 startups along this multi-month journey to find our winning team.”
The competition is organized under 10 industries and any locally based business can enter to compete, regardless of their stage, sector, or fundraising history.
Kicking-off at this week’s STL TechWeek at the Closing Ceremony on April 12, companies will be able to enter the competition by submitting a one minute video pitch. Pitches will then be voted by the community to select the top 100 companies, the 10 highest ranked companies within each of the industries.

Maryland Heights-based Lumeris closes $100 million funding round
A Maryland Heights-based health care business has raised $100 million in equity capital.

Lumeris, a privately held company, provides technology and consulting to health systems and physician groups. This latest capital will expand that work, the company said.
The funding round was led by Deerfield Management and Endeavor Health. Other funders included Kleiner Perkins, Sandbox Industries, BlueCross BlueShield Venture Partners and JDLinx.

Lumeris focuses on value-based plans, in which payments are made per patient, or per set of services. In more traditional fee-for-service plans, a doctor, hospital or clinic gets a set payment for a single visit, surgical procedure or scan.

Proponents of value-based models argue that it incentivizes health care providers to keep patients healthier overall, to avoid costly services later on. Value-based models have been growing, in recent years. Lumeris Chairman and CEO Mike Long said in a statement that the new capital will help the company meet the growing demand for those payment models.

They were interviewing Sam Altman today on STL on the Air and he answered my question:

First I asked about investing in North St. Louis. He said yes, he really wants to give back to STL in a big way. He’s pretty busy right now so it would be a more long term goal.

Second I asked about maybe opening a satellite OpenAI office in STL and he says probably not, at least not on the research side as we don’t have the talent. Potentially there could be an office opened for other roles in the future though (probably like what Block is running at the moment)

Longer term he would like to explore finding a way to get STL to the point where opening an office would actually be a possibility.

TLDR: Nothing imminent coming to STL from our latest wunderkind, but he hasn’t forgotten about us

They lease 500,000 square feet of office in SF. What a windfall that would be for StL. One can dream

chicken egg problem. how will you nurture/develop talent if there is dearth of tech companies in the area?

Yes, I think the talent pool theory of companies is overrated. Sure, you look for access to universities and colleges, but Dallas suburbs, Charlotte, Austin, San Antonio, Nashville, Boise, etc. did not boom in the past 20 years because they had talent that other cities didn’t haveZ Employers chose to go there and people follow the jobs. Those cities are all full of transplants.

Free money from the state and local governments and a fast growing population of people with the skills to operate it.

Cash App founder Bob Lee, raised in St. Louis, fatally stabbed in San Francisco

Joey Schneider

SAN FRANCISCO – Bob Lee, a St. Louis-raised tech executive and the founder of Cash App, was stabbed to death Tuesday in San Francisco.

Lee, who has also served as chief product officer of MobileCoin, was fatally stabbed in downtown San Francisco.

Lee was fatally stabbed in the densely populated Rincon Hill neighborhood of San Francisco, near Google’s office and Oracle Park, home to the San Francisco Giants. The neighborhood is a mix of offices and modern condo buildings.

Lee was raised in St. Louis and a graduate of Lindbergh High School in south St. Louis County.

This is such a tragic loss, especially for someone who made such a significant impact in the tech world like Bob Lee. San Francisco has long been a hub for innovation and talent, attracting people like Lee to build groundbreaking tools and companies. However, it's deeply concerning how safety remains a pressing issue even in the heart of this tech epicenter.

I recently came across an article about the top software companies in San Francisco (https://www.cleveroad.com/blog/software ... francisco/), and it really highlights how the city continues to thrive as a tech hub. But incidents like this make one wonder if the challenges of living and working in the city are outweighing its opportunities for many. It's heartbreaking to think of how someone who contributed so much could fall victim to such senseless violence.

ST. LOUIS — Just a few years ago, Stereotaxis was on the brink of insolvency, losing millions of dollars a year with millions more in debt.

Now, the local medical device company is growing revenues, adding investors and leaving its longtime home in the Cortex technology district. It expects its new space, at the Globe Building in downtown St. Louis, to more than triple manufacturing capacity. Stereotaxis CEO David Fischel said the new building is designed for collaboration. “It can accommodate significant growth of the team,” he said.

Stereotaxis is cutting the ribbon on its new home on Wednesday. But the move represents more than Stereotaxis’ success. The company was the first tenant at Cortex in the early 2000s. Its move to downtown’s Globe Building marks a key step for the new Downtown North Urban Insight District, north of Washington Avenue.

Lumeris issued a press release about a new AI feature in their software.

https://www.prnewswire.com/news-release ... 79395.html

What caught my eye was a statement in their about company boilerplate:

"Lumeris employs 1,200 engineers, healthcare specialists, and clinicians across offices in St. Louis and Boston and generated $3 billion in revenues in 2024."

There's plenty of room for this company to scale in the $5 trillion US healthcare industry. Lumeris is a company to keep an eye on. They just might emerge some day as St Louis' next corporate giant.
