Last night PBS ran an hour-long documentary on Chuck Berry. Naturally, St. Louis featured prominently.

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but a movie on HBO Max called "The Empty Man" has some good shots of the Chain of Rocks Bridge, Stan Span, and Downtown from the north in about 3-4 scenes. Also filed in Edwardsville at their courthouse.

HGTV has a show set in KC that's actually pretty good. A woman who flips medium to large houses. Many episodes are 1910-1930 houses.

Watched this the other night.  Had to do the hard sell to the wife, but in the end it was a decent B+ thriller flick with good production quality.  Lots of STL region shots.  Story is loosely woven, though entertaining.  We make a pretty decent backdrop for a paranormal cult!

Funnily enough, I'm actually in that movie as an extra in the scene filmed on the Chain of Rocks Bridge.  I used to do a little bit of acting on the side, and that was the last shoot I ever did.  It was shot all the way back in 2017 and then sat in studio limbo for years as Disney acquired 20th Century Fox, followed by further delay due to COVID.  It's telling that we had to stay on the Illinois side of the bridge during filming, since Missouri no longer has tax incentives for film production and consequently hardly anything shoots here anymore.  Anyway, it was a cool experience, and I'm glad the movie is finding an audience now on HBO Max since unsurprisingly very few people saw it in theaters last October.

I haven't seen this one mentioned. It's a little docco released by HEC on the Battle of St. Louis and the events surrounding it.

House of Thunder

It's quite a nice little production. There's some recognizable local historians behind it and in it. And they do a nice job of talking about the implications of the thing. I'm not sure I'd ever carefully considered what would have happened had the English won, but . . . a cricket match with a visiting Mexican team from Los Angeles kind of makes sense, actually. (Though soccer seems a heck of a lot more likely.)

^The first time I heard about that my jaw dropped. I still can't quite believe it. Our government has truly been a horror show more often than we care to admit.

Hope it's filmed here.  We have a very tight knit technical production talent pool here in STL.

I've been watching clips from A&E's Live Rescue in St. Louis and nothing has ever made me more homesick. That show encapsulates St. Louis better than anything.

So I've kind of fallen down a You Tube rabbit hole searching out these videos of on location filming locations--comparing scenes from the movies to what the areas look like now.

This one in particular is the best I've seen of several that compare Escape from New York STL filming locations

And until I found this I had no idea that classic "In the Health of the Night" was filmed in and around Sparta, Illinois

If you know of any others that include MO/IL filming locations feel free to share them here.

^Movies, or YouTube videos discussing the locations? Escape from New York, White Palace, and Up in the Air are probably the three most famous films shot here. King of the Hills is another that's pretty good. Game of Their Lives gets some discussion, but it's apparently not well regarded. (I'm tempted to give it a watch one day anyway.) But there's a whole Wiki list of films shot primarily or partially here, oddly enough.

Escape From New York is on Prime Video but is leaving on 3/31. I recently checked it out and nailed most of those locations.

So one of the YouTube guys who does these "filming locations then and now" videos (Scott on Tape) did Planes Trains and Automobiles--but only the Chicago area locations (the El stop near the end, the house where Neil--Steve Martin--lived, and the old motel Del--John Candy--drove the car into)
In St. Louis the filming locations were Lambert airport, I-70 and the parking lot of Renaissance Hotel. I know one scene was supposed to take place at the downtown STL bus station, but I'm not sure if it was filmed at the old Greyhound station on Tucker.

Maybe if I get savvy enough I'll do my own video comparing the locations from 1990 to now for White Palace. It's not the same kind of cultural touchstone film that Escape from NY or Planes, Trains and Automobiles is but it could still intrigue some viewers. I have a DVD copy as I don't think it's streaming anywhere now, but from memory I know the opening shot where James Spader is attending a bachelor party was filmed at the Lemp Mansion. The titular "White Palace" where he first meets Susan Sarandon is the White Knight on Olive and 18th and he later meets Susan Sarandon at the bar that is now Sister Cities Cajun restaurant on South Broadway. Sarandon's house was near Tamm and Manchester in Dogtown.
