Good to see this out now, i suggest this to them 6 months ago and they were already kicked around ideas & moved quickly
There are crews working in there today. A couple of the doors are open and two trucks are parked on the walkway that used to be the west entrance to Union Station mall.

This needs to feature a European menu with a European-heavy drink selection.
Fish and chips, schnitzel, pretzels, French onion soup, wurst, curry ketchup, brown ales, radlers, etc.
It will be a damn shame if they're serving burgers and fried chicken sandwiches.

Agree….albeit in addition to and not in lieu of, burgers and fried chicken sandwiches.

I just hope it has a strong European lean.
I want to see Balkan Treat Box open a second location right next to the stadium, too.
Hofbrauhaus had no idea MLS was coming, but could you imagine how much more successful it would be in St. Louis if it were in Downtown West near Centene Stadium and Union Station?

The menu will focus on distinctive sandwiches and bar appetizers. One attraction will be products from Carnegie Deli, the 85-year-old Manhattan institution, which will license its use on qualified restaurant menus. Expect to see oversized sandwiches on New York-style rye bread, bulging with corned beef and pastrami, plus all-beef hot dogs, potato knishes, and signature cheesecakes, along with black and white cookies.
Also featured on the lunch and dinner menus will be riffs on St. Louis themed-foods, such as a Dr. Pepper–braised pork steak, a big-as-your-face toasted ravioli, and different iterations of gooey butter cake. And since The Pitch will open early for breakfast on weekends, iterations of the St. Louis slinger are being considered. The remainder of the menu is still being developed by Kellon McCardie, the chef who created similar offerings at the 10,000-square-foot Westport Social, another LHM venue.
Along with a full bar, The Pitch will offer a wide variety of sports bar–style beers, including Europeans, domestics, and local and seasonal crafts.

Nothing says soccer like a New York deli and cheesecake.
Though the menu sounds like a great fit for the neighborhood, as I do absolutely love and adore a good Jewish deli, it doesn't sound like a great fit for a soccer bar.
Kind of disappointing if you ask me.

Hang on—just remembered, Schlalfy already has fish and chips, pretzels and schnitzel. Bigger question: is that IMO's still open?

Someone needs to open a true Euro bar near the stadium that will open early for English Premier League games. I'd love to have a place down there to go and watch Liverpool F.C.
I'm confident you could get people to spend an entire day down there absorbing soccer -- EPL in the morning, MLS in the afternoon/evening.
It's a crying shame how there are no really good German restaurants in this city.

I don't blame them for hedging their bets a bit in a spot attached to a tourist destination and hotel.RockChalkSTL wrote: ↑Jun 07, 2022Someone needs to open a true Euro bar near the stadium that will open early for English Premier League games. But I like your thought. Maybe the old Rocket Bar/El Boracho/Nectar/a few other things at 20th & Locust?

Was just looking at the Schlafly menu and their menu does offer those European dishes that I would want to see in at least one restaurant near Centene Stadium.shadrach wrote: ↑Jun 07, 2022Hang on—just remembered, Schlalfy already has fish and chips, pretzels and schnitzel. I've never been, though. Is the food good?
We did a "staycation" this weekend at the Union Station Curio hotel with some family members that live in the exurbs or further out.
-the hotel is nice but I still can't get past the big sprawling complex. It feels like staying in a Vegas casino hotel with the looooong walks.
-they really enjoyed everything and were impressed by the soccer stadium
-usual complaints about prices and the aquarium needing to be bigger
-the fact they left the Einstein Bros kitchen/counter/tables behind looks trashy. That needs to be ripped out.

I’ve been and its good! Beer selection is good as well.RockChalkSTL wrote:Was just looking at the Schlafly menu and their menu does offer those European dishes that I would want to see in at least one restaurant near Centene Stadium.shadrach wrote: ↑Jun 07, 2022Hang on—just remembered, Schlalfy already has fish and chips, pretzels and schnitzel. Either Gringo is going through a remodel or it's closing for good. Driving by today it appears to be taken apart inside.
Good to see them leveraging that outdoor area. I don't think any of the previous tenants ever did that.dbInSouthCity wrote: ↑Jun 08, 2022First renderings
I never like being the hater, but this feels so inauthentic. It's like a BPV concept. Schlafly and the now deceased 1900 Olive block would have been less of a beat you over the head with soccer district. Just a normal, independent, healthy pub district with some tvs, beer gardens, etc. It's similar to Center Ice Brewery. You can still be a hockey-forward haunt without forcing your brand into such stringent goalposts/clientele. It pigeon holes and devalues the universal applicability. Just like you can be a premier spot to catch a game without having soccer balls all over your pub.
I mean it's in Union Station, home of Landrys and the Station Soda Fountain, what did you expect? It looks cool enough to me and will probably bring people to the area to drink beforehand that wouldn't otherwise.bwcrow1s wrote:I never like being the hater, but this feels so inauthentic. I think it will be, at the very least, mildly successful... just because of game-day traffic mixed and its proximity to the stadium, hotels, and parking. There will be plenty of beer drinkers to go around for Schlafly, Maggie O'Brien's, The Pitch, etc.

I tend to agree.bwcrow1s wrote: ↑Jun 08, 2022I never like being the hater, but this feels so inauthentic. It's like a BPV concept. There's a very generic feeling to the bar rendering. With the exception of the tvs, it really doesn't look like a sports - and definitely not a soccer - bar to me.
My hope is still that we are going to get some more authentic English and German pubs in the area.
It should be successful.pattimagee wrote: ↑Jun 08, 2022I think it will be, at the very least, mildly successful... just because of game-day traffic mixed and its proximity to the stadium, hotels, and parking. Perhaps not everybody has a taste for schnitzel and shepherd's pie like me, but they somehow taste even better when you're watching soccer.
Were you guys really expecting a hard core purist, totally European-centric football only place that was so absolutist that they wouldn't even carry Budweiser plus refused to show dirty American sports like hockey and baseball? Is your demand that the place would fit in perfectly next to Emirates or Old Trattford?
Honestly, I find it weird that MLS fans would want to pattern themselves after European fans. I'd rather have something uniquely American that is representative of what St. Louis is as a city.dweebe wrote: ↑Jun 08, 2022Were you guys really expecting a hard core purist, totally European-centric football only place that was so absolutist that they wouldn't even carry Budweiser plus refused to show dirty American sports like hockey and baseball? Early on in the exploration process this was something that was looked at.
I don't think their goal was to be Amsterdam or a pub, the final product is basically a modernized version of a tavern.

(Quick sidetrack) I wish someone would open a pub in the old Tigin space. It's already built out!RockChalkSTL wrote: ↑Jun 08, 2022My hope is still that we are going to get some more authentic English and German pubs in the area.
