AES has developed a large solar array on a former landfill in Bellvegas. I heard about this a while ago but had no idea they were this far along

That's awesome...I wasn't even aware of this project.  Would love to see some of the other landfills in the area covered in arrays like this.

Agreed - such a clever use of land.

So much unused land that would be perfect for this. My first thought would be the area around Lambert, particularly the empty neighborhoods to the NW. Maybe even some of those superfund sites on the east side.

Some landfills also use the methane from decomposition to generate electricity although I don't think it is widespread. A combination of the two would be nice.

I have to wonder if that's the eventual plan for a lot of it. The little solar array there feels like a proof of concept for something bigger.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I was under the impression that the west noise abatement land (the old Carrollton subdivision, the area near Berry Hill, etc.) are unable to be redeveloped until the debt on the runway is paid off?  I thought that was the reason almost all of that is still undeveloped.  Meanwhile, most of the Kinloch noise abatement land has been turned over to warehousing.  However, there is still a good amount near the new fuel depot by the air cargo ramps that would provide some good space for something like this.

I can also think of a few other good sized landfills too.  Oak Ridge, Milam, Valley Park, Edwardsville to name a few...

In my humble opinion, Oak Ridge is a slam dunk.  Permanently closed and seemingly ready for a Belleville style investment.

^That's certainly what I've heard. But I think we're pretty close to the point where those notes will be paid down and things can start to happen.
