The NE corner

Kind of reminds me of the Waldbart Florist Building at the SW corner of Big Bend and Clayton - RIP.
Between this, SOGRO, 4500 S. Kingshighway, and a few other fixer uppers that have been done in the past few years, Southtown is starting to heat up. The old Avalon theater site is also owned by Garcia. I would expect them to build a new building on that property in a couple of years.
Now all we need to do is push for the Urban redevelopment of the old Ackerman Toyota, the plaza with the pet store and OfficeMax in it, and the Burlington plaza. Trite now, we have three wards to deal with, the 14th, the 15th, and the 23rd. After ward reduction, I think there will be more development down here as this whole area will be most likely under the same ward.

I have lots of fond memories from that yellow corner building. My doctor had his office on the second floor, and my dad would take us kids to a basement cafeteria on days when my mom was down with a headache. Oh, yeah, and during my teen years, Headquarters had one of their many local head shops on the ground floor.

I have great memories of the bargain basement beneath Chippewa on the way into the Famous. 
Loved that tunnel as a kid. And watched several great movies at the Avalon, including Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. I'm not sure I was ever in Garcia's new building, though. Might have eaten at the cafeteria with my dad's parents once. Was that a Lum's? Glad to see it's in the hands of someone who will take care of it.

Since we’re reminiscing, there used to be a model train shop in one of those buildings. Maybe the one adjacent to Garcia’s. It had everything from old, used Lionels to HO and N stuff. This would have been late 70s/early 80s. My memories have it packed floor to ceiling with sun-faded packages, smelling of mold and dust, weirdly lit and lorded over by a curmudgeon. But that’s most hobby shops....
^Hmmm . . . I don't remember that one, but there was one further south at Devonshire, probably a bit earlier.
Could be. I was a young teenager and living in Ballwin. All these old storefronts looked the same to me then.

I'm with Framer on this. A fellow named Holdegraver owned the place. Don't quite me on the spelling. Seemed like a pretty decent guy. He was always very tolerant of a certain snot nosed kid poking around his shop and wishing his dad would buy a certain very expensive blue train. And I remember it being mostly Lionell, but we went there often. That said, it is a very similar strip and it's not at all far. Also in the old neighborhood. Fond memories. So many old hobby shops of various sorts I miss.

Piper's Coffee is open next to the Golden Hoosier. It's clear that the put A LOT of money into the interior design, it's beautiful. My coffee was really good, and looking at their menu it looks like they have a pretty competitive coffee program. Will definitely be back.

^Glad to hear that! I really feel like we could use a good coffee joint on far Southerer Grand. (It's one of the biggest real lacks in the general area of Bates and Grand.) I'm jealous! And I'll make a note to stop in. The Golden Hoosier was fun. Is the coffee joint also a Garcia project?

Agreed with GoHarv - we've been a few times now already. They are from Kentucky, so this is their 3rd shop, I think.

^I wish the Garcias had been here before the Southtown Famous came down. It's fun to dream about what they might have done with it.
There even used to be a tunnel connecting Southtown to the parking lot across the street!
Never went inside, but I do recall it being there in the mid-90's several years after it closed - Sansone tore it down with no potential tenant, I believe they were trying to woo K-Mart at the time. My guess is we will have the current strip center for a few more decades before it makes sense to redevelop - Absolute shame.
