^Dear lord, I love the quote halfway down: "Before you jump on me: I believe that drivers should be paid well and held to high standards. I believe that a bus driver, with an employed partner, should be able to own a home and raise children." This rather implies that a bus driver without an employed partner should not be able to expect these things. And that, right there, is the root of the problem. You can't solve this with kindness. The only solution is better pay and working conditions. Until you're willing to pony up try shutting up instead. So . . . I'm jumping on 'im. Starting a sentence with "before you jump on me" or "no disrespect" is a sure sign that something stupid lies just ahead.

An actual solution to the problem will require action from the federal government, because private automotive transportation is propped up with huge piles of federal policy and funding. Local governments can take some steps like road diets and lane restrictions. They might push people towards transit which might cut the amount of subsidy required a little. But honestly, the feds made this problem. They need to fix it.

We're effectively paying Americans $1500 each per year to drive, 2-3x as much as on public transit, and then complaining that they don't like buses.

Is there any reason why bus shelters in the city don’t come with a map of the route posted on the inside? The little bus sign only lists the route number and the terminus of the route, which is very little information to work off of. It would be like it the metrolink station signage only said “to lambert airport”, instead of showing the full route with all its stations. The waiting areas at transit centers also don’t have any signage showing the route of the bus you are waiting for, or a countdown to when the next bus is scheduled. It all relies on you doing external research. It also feels like it would useful to put major intersecting routes like grand, Jefferson and Kingshighway on the metrolink map, as the system isn’t very useful on its own.

No good reason, just Metro not doing obvious basic stuff.

To be fair, I don’t know if other cities do this. It just seems like it would cost almost nothing and it’s so obvious. I wish I knew someone who worked there so I could ask.

Maybe there should be a neighborhood map of all the bus routes that go through each neighborhood, and where they go, and it could be put on a poster somewhere prominent in the neighborhood that people can look at while they past. Like a PSA for the transportation options you have in your neighborhood.
