"21c Museum Hotels Co-Founders Laura Lee Brown and Steve Wilson knew the art museum-inspired hotel chain had its own “super fans” out there, and the couple met some of them on a recent founders’ tour to visit all of the properties in one trip.

Brown and Wilson encountered these particular fans while dining at Metropole, the restaurant inside 21c Museum’s Cincinnati location. The guests were trying to visit every location and collected penguin keepsakes from each hotel — the penguin has become a symbol for 21c — to commemorate the visit.

Wilson said he was touched by the gesture. "It's just amazing to see people appreciate an art museum hotel in that way,” Wilson said by phone shortly after finishing up the 22-day trip, about 6,400 miles.

The plan for the tour was put in motion earlier this year as a way to show gratitude to 21c employees who are working to keep the properties safe during the Covid-19 pandemic. The tour started in the early part of October, included all nine existing 21c hotels and two future hotel properties in Des Moines, Iowa, and St. Louis, Missouri.

“We want to share our unending gratitude for our team and everything they are doing to keep our properties running smoothly during this time. We care deeply about the commitments we’ve made to our team, communities, guests and artists,” Wilson said in a statement before the tour started. “21c will be here when Covid-19 has passed. We don’t want to be isolated and unaware. We want to be there, with the people who are carrying 21c forward during this unprecedented time and to do it safely. Everyone is craving connection with the world and with people, and we feel strongly that this message is best delivered in person.”

Wilson reiterated the need to offer these sentiments face to face after the tour ended, saying he’s not very adept at Zoom calls. He said the tour was tiring but “very rewarding” and allowed them to see the full 21c portfolio in a way they had never experienced before. They stayed at each hotel, dined in the restaurants and met with staff, guests, chefs and contributing artists, sharing stories along the way.

The couple used a tour bus as a way to avoid air travel and reduce outside exposure, bringing along only a bus driver, an assistant and a person to chronicle the trip in photos and video, Wilson said. They stayed at least a day at each hotel property and added some additional stops to the itinerary.

Wilson said this is a difficult time for everyone and an especially difficult time to run a business, which is why they wanted to create some positive energy with the tour.“All in all, it made us proud of the company we created and the people who work there. Those people are extensions of us,” he said.

Paris, France-based AccorHotels agreed to buy an 85% share of 21c for $51 million in 2018 and the company. Craig Greenberg also stepped down as president and CEO of the company earlier this year and was replaced by 21c Founding Partner and Chief Operating Officer Sarah Robbins. The CEO title was dropped with the transition as Robbins retained the title of COO."

^Very cool. I made a lot of baskets in that ballroom before they moved the courts. I pray their plans include the pool. It's a legit gem.

It seems this hotel is definitely a go, and that renovation will start soon. There is a facade repair bid package on SLDC Planroom, which includes a set of CDs and a schedule for the whole project.

Site "remobilization" will occur in March, with buck hoists being erected in early April. The scheduled Grand Opening of the hotel is October 28th, 2022.

if they had any creativity the hotel would turn that side parking lot into a huge patio for a restaurant inside and make it a spring/summer/fall beer garden- with blues, cards, mls games pretty much that entire time it would be packed and also other events at Enterprise/Stifel. the area really lacks a go to place before and after events

Campbell House owns about a third of that parking lot, but of the portion that the hotel owns, the northern 2/3, next to Locust St., will eventually become an "art park", according to the drawings.

So, not exactly a beer garden, but I'm sure they'll use it for events where tasty beverages will be served.

At the very least, two curb cuts onto Locust St. will disappear.

I haven't seen the plans, but what I heard is that the restaurant will be on the center-east side of the building with the bar along the eastern wall, likely with some sort of access to the art park/outdoor space mentioned above. The northwest corner will be a cafe/library, and the northeast corner will be a billiards room. The rooftop will feature a bar, beer garden, and patio space. No word on whether the rooftop will be open to the public, but given the open nature of this hotel concept, I would assume so.

Yep, that's what is indicated on the plans (First Floor Architectural Plan is on page 37).

The bar area is a two-story space featuring a U-shaped bar against the east wall, contiguous with the central lobby/gathering/gallery space. Doors on either side of the bar lead out to the art park. The junior ballroom on the second floor overlooks the bar area and art park.

Also, the rooftop bar is huge. It runs the entire length of the north façade and wraps around most of the east side as well, with skylights in the roof above the bar, a beer garden all along the north façade, and a separate patio next to the bar along the east façade. This very well may be the coolest rooftop bar in the city...at least until someone puts one on top of 909 Chestnut...

I've noticed several pickup trucks in the parking lot a few times while out for a run, but the site itself has not really changed at all. The pickups themselves do not appear to be there regularly.
