Just noting that the abandoned Cleveland High School had a 3-alarm fire on Thursday. Post-Dispatch says they had to knock holes in the roof and walls to get it out.

It makes sense finacially. One would think that the small student body of these schools would make them perform much better. Crazy to have a highschool with less than 300 kids. Hope the buildings can be sold and utilized as apartments or something.

A good number of the tax abatement deals that folks criticize as taking money from SLPS typically run for 10 years, correct? If so, when do we expect some big projects’ abatement deals to expire and start producing higher tax revenue for SLPS? 10 years ago was 2010, which was probably a down year for development with the recession, but presumably shouldn’t we see a few big deals come off abatement in the next 2-3 years?

well we've gotten into a practice of giving another 10 years when the current expires but there are issues with the your question above- because of state law our property tax revenue can only grow 2% a year so whenever all these projects come off abatement it doesn't mean a huge infusion of cash for SLPS/city/other property tax recipients, it just means that some properties will actually see a small decrease or no increase at all so we can stay under that 2% year to year growthSouthCityJR wrote: ↑Dec 15, 2020A good number of the tax abatement deals that folks criticize as taking money from SLPS typically run for 10 years, correct? I thought property tax receipts could grow if it's from new properties, but not from assessment increases. IOW a new building adds, but if the assessment of existing buildings and land goes up 5%, the levy has to go down such that the revenue is up only 2%.

^Thanks for the info. I had no clue there was a 2% cap. So basically when the property tax on my house goes up 10% in a year it has to be offset by someone else getting a decrease?

Does anyone have any advice about the best way to look into sports leagues for kids in the city? I have a friend with a 1st grade daughter who is a bit lost looking through all of the options, and I have no good advice either.

Adams referenced research showing that exposure to arts and engagement in their community could bring students' grades up and disciplinary actions down at the school, where enrollment has dwindled to below 200 students.
The goal is to increase enrollment at Sumner by 10% each year, and to earn a national landmark designation for the school by 2024.
I can't express enough how much of a threat this is to school funding. 20-25% of the assessed value of schools districts is personal property.

Aren't online purchases only taxed at the state level and not the local level? If so, how does that 'local sales tax revenue' help?

^The exterior certainly isn't as much to look at, but it's quite a lot larger and it might be easier to add more lab space on the site. I can actually see where tech and the arts would be a better fit than arts and NJROTC. And NJROTC could fit in well at a career academy. It sounds like they're trying hard to rationalize the space they have to best fit the programs and student body, and they're fighting to keep all the present options available. I'm fairly impressed, truth be told.
I can understand why students and maybe even some of the teachers and administrators would be hesitant. Walk everybody through the process. Make sure you can build support. Maybe push it back a year or so to build support. But it doesn't sound like a terrible idea.
