Has anyone brought up the idea that this was the plan all along? Get multiple cities to bid, then break it up into three cities to reap way more incentives?
I don't know that incentives were really a driving factor here. I think the competition between the 200+ cities was so Amazon could basically build a database filled with information that most people don't even know about their own cities. North American cities just gave Amazon a virtual treasure trove of information, free of charge. Amazon will use this to extort concessions when it comes to building distribution and data centers and other potential offices in the future.

If incentives were the factor then why not pick NJ or Maryland? Those two each offered over $6 billion, NJ over $7 billion I believe. VA's incentives will clock in at about $1 billion and change, NYC around $3 billion and Nashville (I'd hardly call that an HQ announcement) is around $100 million (all this is based on what I've seen so far). This is still a boatload of money, but not anywhere close to what they could have extracted from another state. If it was about incentives, Amazon lefts billions upon billions on the table.

The whole thing was a sham. The writing was on the wall from the start if you ask me. Bezos owns a $23 million mansion in DC and the Washington Post and lo and behold 3 DC locations made the short list. He was going home all along...he just decided to take everyone else along for the ride.

Add in the fact that DC area is home to one of the biggest buyers in the world in the Federal Government itself as well as the fact that Amazon is huge provider of cloud space to the US Government. It made a lot of sense to ramp up its presence in the DC area just as made a lot of sense for him to grab the Wash Post when the opportunity to arise. This guy is sharp. So it was just a matter of picking the sites on the short list and then deciding from there. I think in time they will rename differently at end of day, maybe Seattle becomes world HQ, New York becomes NA HQ and DC will be DC

Arlington/Crystal City has the advantage of a lot of existing space available and an office tower coming available after a major corporate move out. The office tower becoming empty bit should sound familiar to those in St. Louis. Time for city and state to reorganize a corporate campus package, incentive deal based around the One ATT center, parking garage & City Garden touch up or mid size tech satelite office, 2500 to 5000 employees (think Amazon and Nashville). San Fran just past its corporate head tax and the biggest vocal opponent was Jack Dorsey himself. Twitter could easily break up its org, with NA HQ at One Twitter Center in the middle of the country.

^ Agree with the AT&T package/campus idea. However, adding Citygarden to the mix might not be allowed. A city vote is required to develop any parkland if I'm not mistaken. Besides, Citygarden is a gem, not sure I'd want to see it turned over to a private corporation.

Also, from what I read about the San Francisco tax, Dorsey said he had no real problems with it from Twitter's perspective. It was more related to Square. Which could still be good for St. Louis. With that tax passing I could see him giving Square's HQ in St. Louis a serious look.

I was thinking in terms of a hard commitment to spend a few million dollars sprucing up Citygarden, replace sidewalks in the immediate area, etc. Not really turning it over.

At the moment, committing several million dollars in the immediate area for an empty office tower shouldn't be a priority. But a company willing to put several thousand jobs downtown is worth a change in priorities.

My two cents is they run with Philly. Philadelphia/Amtrak has a big redevelopment proposal in the works and would be a perfect fit for Amazon H2Q to plop itself on top of the northeast rail corridor with quick access into DC (plus no worries of a train tunnel being flooded by Hudson River because NY/NJ too busy trying to get Feds to pay for it all). The only thing for Philly is airport sucks with any kind of weather but can say the same for New York.

My guess is they end up staying in New York, but I would hazard a guess that Nashville stands to gain if they end up really switching things up.

^ NYC adds close to 80,000 jobs per year. My god, Amazon was a drop in the bucket for a city and region like that. They'll be fine.

It also seems many are ignoring that Amazon has said they will continue to expand at their already existing facilities in NYC...without incentives!

This is a must-read article.
I hope everyone involved in STL economic development are reading Enrico Moretti's book The New Geography of Jobs and putting its lessons into play here.

Worth mentioning that the first phase will open as planned in June and has enough room for 14,000 employees...

The larger second phase is being put on hold.

Nashville has been the star of Amazons HQ2 announcements thus far. Amazonians love it.
