It was the Super Cat Fest - The annual gathering for catamaran performance boats. The shootout is such a big event that individuals and manufacturers truck their boats in for the week from all coasts for the shootout week.framer wrote:Interesting. ^ A Gulf Shores condo building plopped on a reservoir without a beach comes to mind. Give it some time a Lake of the Ozarks will look like any strip of beach FL or the Gulf. Just nee a string of crappy strip mall stores on the other side of the road.
When I was a kid (40+ years ago), my family spent two weeks at the Ozarks every year. We stayed at one of those classic mom-and-pop resorts, rented our own cabin, and had a great time. The lake sure has changed since then; not better or worse; just different. There's still quiet sections of the lake if you just search them out. Heck, I can still find mom-and-pop resorts to stay at.

I don't see this as good, bad, or indifferent. I really have no opinion. But . . . the Lake resembles a resort town for some reason. It used to resemble a resort town from the fifties. (And right by the dam there's still some evidence of this.) Now it looks like one from the present, if your pictures are any indication. If you like resort towns, great. But . . . do you think it doesn't look like other towns with comparable industries? Because it absolutely does.
More so I was referring to the "pretty soon portion" I was completely agreeing with what he was saying, I'm just saying it's looked like the Florida coast for the past 15-20 years.
Personally, my favorite thing about The Lake is lack of building setback. All of the Army Corp projects have a 100' setback. So while seeing rolling hills of trees against Table Rock Lake looks nice, it gets boring (and disorienting) after awhile.
But then again, I'm a city person. I like looking at the cabins and condo towers. But let's also keep in mind that The Lake has 1000+ miles (corrected from 2000, thanks Moorlander!) of shoreline, if you want to get away from the buildings, you can.

^ it’s true. LOTO is not a Corp lake and not used for flood controll so it’s one of the few lakes in the country where you can build right on the water. Another reason it’s the best lake in the country.

More on-topic about the sports complex though, it looks pretty ambitious! With the whole area being about hospitality and vacation, there are certainly plenty of available lodging to support the influx of people it would bring.
Is there a comparable sized city that hosts sporting events in a venue that large? They'd need to build partnerships with the youth leagues and organizations they are trying to attract. Good location to host regional championships for travel leagues from STL/KC/Springfield/Columbia perhaps?
