Well . . . I suppose it will be for future generations to decide how to treat the skin graft.
^ Was definitely the ugliest part of campus left since they got rid of the brutalist concrete buildings to the west. Should improve the aesthetic from Forest Park Parkway and the pedestrian overpass for students/visitors north of campus.
Agreed. This'll look much better. Those floor to ceiling windows are a huge improvement.
Let's all keep in mind that in the '50s the Riverfront, Mill Creek Valley, Soulard, and Lafayette Park were all considered "ugly".
Yes, Brutalism has had a rough history but SP has hit the nail on the head here, what's happening is no different that the "modernizing" of Downtown buildings that happened in the '40s - '60s.

Wash U is destroying this building just as Brutalism and Neo-Brutalism is re-gaining respect around the world.

I usually find myself appreciating and respecting all varieties of architecture... but brutalism.. I just can't haha

Brutalism might be back, but what seems to be driving a lot of the need to tear down brutalist buildings is that they aren't very easy to renovate.

I kinda feel like brutalism is the Air France livery of architecture; solid and decent-looking when new, but gets incredibly dingy and dirty very quickly thereafter.
Funny, I feel like it's the interstate highway of architecture. Lots of concrete and not much in the way of nature but functional.Trololzilla wrote: ↑Apr 27, 2017I kinda feel like brutalism is the Air France livery of architecture; solid and decent-looking when new, but gets incredibly dingy and dirty very quickly thereafter.

"Not a very inspired design"
I AGREE
I can see the designers saying geez all we have is a bunch of stacked boring boxes...I know lets put poles/sicks on the front of the boxes that will make them look more interesting!

ugh. i didn't even realize they were replacing the bridge. i thought it looked good for what it was. the stone facing matched the campus aesthetic. the new design looks like... concrete. and sticks. oh, boy.

I agree. I think it is a cool juxtaposition with the remaining part of the brutalist building.
