We should do a roll call some time. By the way, my name is Matt.
LOL! Are all other Matts also right-handed and goodlooking? Just kidding. I'm left handed.
Do you teach Real Estate Law or Real Estate Finance by any chance?

Wow. Sorry for coming in late on this one, but why exactly is it not fair for people whom actually own property in a neighborhood to demand a certain standard of living there? This is not the homeless' neighborhood. Why are they being interviewed about how the think the area should be run? Would I be able to set up shop in the middle of a cul-de-sac in west county, and then complain about the way things are done on the street and the demeanor of those living in the houses around me? How is this different? Uppity doopity dop? The editors at Fox 2 should be ashamed.

^ They should be, but rarely, if ever, are.
Very good questions. The city and some of its parks are abandoned: people move in and care about what the neighborhood look like: they get blamed for homelessness. F'ing rediculous I say.

Food writing. But if the rules are still the same as they were in my day, SLU students can go over to Wash U and take any class that SLU doesn't offer and pay for it through their SLU tuition. We do a segment on restaurant marketing, so I bet a clever R.E. student could make a case that it fits his curriculum.
SLU still does have something like that. Some of our classes our joint classes with the architecture school. I'll have to see what I can do.
Good points, Grover and newstl2020. By the way, the Friends of Lucas Park board has been formed and will be holding our first meeting tonite. This meeting is just for board members as we are first concerning ourselves with administrative activities, planning, etc.
This is another positive step in further nurturing the park to become a wonderful asset to the downtown neighborhood. The website is a bit sparse as of yet, but is located at http://lucaspark.org.

^ Very cool to see, IMO you should put together a volunteer group to lead others in effective assistance to the homeless. It would be very positive to have your group demonstrate that a clean and safe Lucas Park is not the opposite of caring for the homeless. At the same time, I think downtown residents have every right to be angry that their park is constantly defiled while suburban parks are "expected" to be clean and free of the homeless.
^ Excellent point. We're in touch with William Seidhoff of the St. Louis DHS.
DHS Synergies (Email to William)
I think there could be synergy between both of our groups. Specifically, I'd like to share on our website how samaritans can help the downtown homeless in a strategic manner consistent with the Mayor's Ten Year Plan. This would include a list of the strategic organizations, what they do, and their contacts. Additionally, I'd like to share what is not considered appropriate and why. I thought I saw a pamphlet displayed on the newscast as well. How can I obtain a digital and/or print copy of it?
Library Synergies
Also, we're in touch with the President of the Public Library Foundation to synergize with them as well. The library will soon be undergoing a fantastic renovation and it would be nice to foster library activities in such an outdoor setting. I received feedback from him today and he's looking forward to beginning the dialogue.
Please continue to speak up with your ideas! For this to be successful, we'll need the community's buyin...

I bumped the library thread in the Downtown Projects and Construction forum. Innov8ion, do you have any news re: the status of this?
And I appreciate the work you're doing for Lucas Park. Hopefully, you can come to an equitable solution that will balance the desire for an attractive park with the needs of the current "residents".

FYI- Yesterday Downtown Children's Center moved to Motor Lofts. Thus, no more kids on the eastern playground in Lucas Park. I wonder how this will impact Lucas Park; I always theorized the playground, parents, and police associated with DCC were a stabilizing force in Lucas Park.
Bonwich, food writing sounds like a cool class. I was journalism at Mizzou and we never had any interesting classes like that.

Hey! I'm left-handed and good look...well...did I mention my name is Matt and I'm left-handed?
Seriously, I'm glad to see the effort to improve Lucas Park moving forward. Good luck guys! And let us know if you set a date for that barbecue!
Well, is organizing a bbq really the savviest idea? After all, aren't there a variety of complaints about the homeless feedings?ThreeOneFour wrote:Seriously, I'm glad to see the effort to improve Lucas Park moving forward. Good luck guys! And let us know if you set a date for that barbecue!
It might be a good idea to organize a cleaning of the park. Some edging, aerate the grass, etc... I'm sure there a variety of other possible activities as well.
The board met and I expect definite positive change by next spring.

Any activity in the park by downtown residents is a Good Thing. The central location of Lucus Park makes it a natural gathering place for ya'll, kind of like a block party. But you can't block off your street, Washingotn Ave.
I say: have a BBQ! Your intent isn't to feed the homeless, your intent is to promote neighborlyinteraction Get to know your neighbors, it builds the social fabric.
(Just note: Find out if there is a regulation about cooking in the PArk. In the back of my mind seems lik there's something about that in public city parks.)
Is it just me or have the groups of homeless men hanging out moved from Lucas Park to Memorial Park in front of Union Station and the Main Post Office?
At all times of the day you'll now see group of men hagning out, drinking from their beer cans; yelling, cursing and laughing. Then around 5pm they'll start migrating towards Larry Rice's palace.
For example this morning around 9am Lucas Park was empty. But in front of the main Post Office and Union Station were three or four groups of guys hanging out and they were already drinking from paper bags.
Is this happening because of the Lucas park cleanup, the renovations to the Salvation Army building, or both?

I know that the cops are called each and every time we see someone drinking, peeing in the park, fighting, selling drugs, or doing something else illegal.
Hopefully they're looking for a new place to destroy...

The Park in from tof the main Post Office always has merry bands of homeless hanging around. Drinking. Smoking. Cursing.
