Is renovation being done to the Monkey Building on Washington? I drove by yesterday and it looked like new windows are being installed on the upper floors.

The windows were replaced. They had been broken.

I haven't heard of any new tenants besides Lotus doing some expansion.

I am not sure how old this information is, but it was posted on the City's development activity page here:

http://stlcin.missouri.org/devprojects/ ... jectID=485

Singer Jeff Hardin was reported to have purchased the Monkey

Building in October 2002. He had plans to open a restaurant there. Since

then, the building was purchased by developer David Jump. Currently no

plans have been announced to further develop this building.

It's very old.

Jump still owns it. There was a contract on it a couple of months ago, but it was never closed on.

There is a new contract on the Monkey building. If things go through, a Market/Grocer (sorry, still can't say the name of the store) will be on the first floor. Low priced lofts on the 2nd and 3rd.

That's great news! Do you happen to know if the lot next to it sold as well?

The empty parking lot or the long slender building across 15th? The CBRE web site has had it listed as "In Contract" for a few months now. So, I'm not sure what the deal is. ($475,00 for .17 acres!) Over a year ago there was a contract on the lot for around 200k, but the owner changed his mind and decide to sit on it and wait for the value to go up. Who knows, he may be doing that again.

And I haven't heard anything about the building across 15th St. As far as I know the owner is not interested in selling it yet.

This is suuuuch good news! Where did you hear this? There was talk of a Straubs for a while in the Terracotta Lofts. I wonder if they will take the space in the Monkey building.

No, it's not Straubs.

It has always suprised me that this building has been out there for so long. The For Sale signs have been there for ages. Good news and welcome to whomever the tenant is.

The Monkey Building has been sold as of 2 weeks ago.

The Grocer on the first floor as a tenant fell through though.

The plan is still for some type of retail on the ground floor and apartments or lofts on the 2nd and 3rd.

Part of the roof collapsed over the weekend. Firefighters were inspecting it this morning.

Structural Concerns About Downtown Building

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- A roof that appears to be sagging is causing concerns in downtown St. Louis. The building is in the 14-hundred block of Washington, near the City Museum on the northwest side of downtown.

There are no reports of injuries, but ambulance crews and firefighters are on the scene. They are hesitant to go inside until they figure out exactly what's going on.

No word yet on what the building houses or how many people work or live there.

How do you know it's the Monkey Building? I'm not familiar with what is on that block.

If you look at it up close, you'll see why it's called the Monkey Building.

Unfortunately pretty much the whole roof has collapsed causing extensive damage to the entire building.

One of the "developers" decided to test the structural integrity of the floors himself instead of hiring an engineer....

Well, one of the floors failed, collapsed and took out the support to the roof. Which then also collapsed rupturing sprinkler pipes causing even more damage.

"I have not failed. I've just found 10000 ways that won't work." - Thomas Edison.

Better that a structure fail under load test than it fail under an actual load.

Gotta wonder what they'd be testing so much weight for.
