Grain Silos into Apartments?

I was in Akron for business last week and was fascinated by building. I thought the grain silo has been converted into apartments but it seems to be a now closed hotel.

So, that grain silo immediately west of the Ikea?

That grain silo near IKEA is owned by Ray Carroll and is very much in operation. I’m not sure I can pinpoint the discussion for this considering it’s spread across multiple threads at this point…but the ideas and examples from other cities are numerous across this site.

I don't think I realized it was in operation at that. thanks for sharing.

Off the top of my head I wanna say maybe the Cortex thread?

I’ve posted a screenshot of a painted silo in Wichita on this site at least three times. Here’s one:

Best solution, a developer buys the land and tears them down

^ 100%, this. I think the neighborhood has a few more lots to fill before they get around to that one.

I'd love to see it gone in the next 10 years. Something impressive should go on that site.

I'd rather not. I find them dramatic. Plenty of parking lots to build on nearby.
Better to not tear down the little railroad building at the Metrolink tracks and do something with it, room for a patio. The other grassy corner could have something too.

Still don't understand why the tracks had to turn north that far east when the tracks turn north on the west side of the station much closer to it. And not putting two platforms by where the tracks were and keep them straight, or move the northern set of tracks a bit to the north to make room for a center platform. I guess it was cheaper and less disruptive.

I agree. I like them.  Good for the mid-town to CWE "skyline" mix.

if they ever are no longer used, I'd prefer some sort of creative repurposing.

Isn’t it currently in use by a grain company though?

Yes, it's still in use. Painting it probably would work well either as they are frequently patching the numerous cracks/seams.

So Cortex should try to have discussions to at least attempt a mural. Could be incredibly STL focused with local artists and inspiration.

Omaha is doing it. Sorry to stir the pot on this.

The current silo owners don't want to play ball. As covered many times in the UrbanSTL threads linked above. Would be cool, but unless something drastic has changed this topic is going to be just a rehashing of pipe dreams.
