Anyone know what is happening on the NE corner of Tucker & Clark? It looks like they are going to do something with the surface lot there.

I was wondering that myself this morning. Workers were erecting scaffolding over the sidewalk.

Treasurer's office is replacing the street lot there with a parking structure that will incoporate the existing building to the west and have street level retail.

Seriously?? That's awesome!

EDIT: I can't believe I got so excited about a damn garage, but I just hate surface parking. Anecdote: I was walking south on 11th St from Washington today and realized that street has such potential for a great urban canyon, but all those f*****g parking lots ruin it.

Is this the lot next to city hall or the courthouse?

It's actually next to the Justice Center.*

*A misnomer if there ever was one.

Um...you think you could have told us about this a little sooner? (j/k :) )

Sounds like a good plan, and I'm sure that Cannon (who's developing the powerhouse across the street) and the owner of the little office building next door are both VERY happy.

Great news. I'm especially glad to hear that retail space will be included. Hopefully this garage will look much better than the half-arsed effort on the SW corner of Seventh and Olive streets.

Seriously, who in the hell thought hubcaps and wheels would look good on the second floor of the garage?

BTW, have you seen any renderings? Will the design be similar to that of the justice center?

In addition to the sidewalk scaffolding, there is a construction trailer, no parked cars on a workday and the perimeter fence is being removed.

In hindsight, I remember seeing them do some spot drilling (soil testing?) in November or December.

An announcement is scheduled for next week or the week after. Readers of this forum, though, often get the inside skinny.

Incorporating the existing bulding to the West? Doesn't the West side of this site front Tucker? Did you mean the existing building to the East between Tucker and the Eagleton?

Edit: and where is the Powerhouse going? How have I not heard of any of this? My downtown South info must be slipping.

I think he meant east - the little gray office building. The powerhouse to the south, on the other side of Clark, is being renovated for Cannon Architects new offices:

Thanks again for the info. So will this be an open-to-the-general public garage, one for city employees, some kind of combo?

The St. Louis city treasurer's office is expected to break ground today on a $16 million downtown parking garage that officials say will help bring more visitors and businesses to the city.

The 192,000-square-foot, eight-level Justice Center Garage at Tucker Boulevard and Clark Avenue will replace an existing surface parking lot owned by the city and will include 542 parking spaces. It also will have 10,000 square feet of retail at street level.

"Parking in downtown, as in any urban center, is at a premium, and without parking, businesses can't thrive," said Steve Baker, director of planning and support services for the treasurer. "There is a real dearth of parking in that area."

Completion is scheduled for mid-March 2009, Baker said. The project will be funded by revenue bonds issued by the city. Advertisement

The street-level retail is required by downtown development rules, Baker said.

Maybe there's a dearth of parking in this part of downtown per se, but does anyone outside of the treasurer's office really believe downtown parking "is at a premium" here? :?

It's 1922 in St. Louis again.

"Business will cease downtown unless there is a place to park each horseless carriage that wishes to ply our roads."

- Abe Hinkleschmidt (Treasurer - City of St. Louis, 1917-1923)
