Unfortunate events.

Regretfully we are closing Pestalozzi Place. We appreciate all the support you have provided us in the past 2 years. We have been delighted to have been able to serve you and have made many new friends. Both of us hope to see you in the future.

Sincerely,

David Lawrence & Stephen Graef

I looked for a thread on this place, I remember one, but couldn't find it. If you hadn't been to this place, you missed out. They had a great menu, at pretty affordable prices and a decent and inexpensive wine menu. A highly underrated restaurant IMO.

Damn! It's one of those places I always wanted to try but never got around to trying. :(

The word-of-mouth I've heard is consistent with what you said about the place, so this is an unfortunate loss.

Any word on what is going to happen with the space?

This is sad news! I just ate there about 3 weeks ago on a friday evening -- it seemed quite busy and like they were doing well. Maybe it's a tough location for weeknight business...

Based upon the area, it's more of a destination place, and I think they never quite reached that status. It's close to Grand South Grand, but for most, it's a little long of a walk, despite being only a few blocks from the Grand/Arsenal intersection.

I'd like to hear bonwich's comments, I don't recall reading any reviews on the place.

I gave it a good review when it opened with caveats on the service, which remained really spotty when I went back many months later. Good prices on both food and wine. Hard to find if you're not looking for it. I also ran one of their recipes in Let's Eat earlier this year.

I'm guessing weekday biz or lack thereof shut them down.

I agree on the service. I went a couple times, once I felt like we were ignored, and it was somewhat busy. The other time it wasn't busy at all, and the server wouldn't leave us a lone.

I drove by this weekend, and the signs in the window and front door read "Closed Temporarily".

Hopefully it will reopen. Although it's off the beaten path, it's still a great place for something like this.

In the email, they did say they hoped to see us all 'soon'. Maybe they were just gonna close, and reopen. Seems weird though.

Nice looking place. Horrendous service, albeit by a very nice lady. Pricing very good until you got the food. Very much wanted to like the place.

It's my opinion that these two gents were well intended but didn't have the savvy to pull it off. I was surprised they lasted this long.

My inside source* said they told him they are trying to work something out with the landlord.

*he received a paycheck from PP

There is a rumor going around Tower Grove East neighborhood list-serve that the people who own the Scottish Arms have bought the Pestalozzi Place building and are planning another Celtic-themed restaurant/bar. Anybody have an idea where this rumor came from, or if it is true?

From my neighborhood list-serve this morning, Oh baby!

"We were going to post an official press release in a few weeks but I

will clear some of the speculation about the former Pestalozzi Place.

To everyone in the neighborhood I have yet to meet,

I live on South Compton and own The Scottish Arms restaurant on South

Sarah Street.

Chef Brendan Noonan and I are opening the new restaurant scheduled to

open it's doors the beginning of 2008.

The restaurant will be a high quality neighborhood bistro with a lovely

artistic interior serving seasonal American cuisine backed by European

Tradition.

We will be preparing a variety of cured meats and charcuterie in-house

as well as highlighting fine meats and cheeses from Europe and America.

We are planning on having a "Neighborhood" opening party beginning of

2008 so please feel free to email me so I can keep in touch with the

plans.

You will most probably see us working there so please pop in and say

hello, we will be delighted to answer any questions you may have.

Kind Regards,

Ally Nisbet"

COOL. Scottish Arms is a great place - this will be a nice addition to TGE.

While I am sorry that PP didn't make it, I'm glad that the Scottish Arms folks are taking it on. I try to go to the S. Arms annually, relaly can't get there more often. The blokes in kilts are a draw. I belong to the St. Andrews Society (Scottish heritage gorup) and they meet there regularly.

Does anyone know if The Shaved Duck (the new restaurant in the Pestalozzi Place spot) is open yet? I know they were supposed to open in March, but I can't seem to find any confirmation of this or a website, or a menu, or a review, on the intertubes. Even if I use the Googles, the closest I can get is a list of the beers that they are (going to be??) selling. Anybody............Bonwich??

I haven't received any notice of its official opening, and none of the food blogs and forums that I haunt (when I'm not spending too much time on this one) have said that it's open.

Next couple of weeks supposedly. I believe they had a slight delay in their occupancy permit and/or liquor license?

There is a phone number on their website, as otherwise incredibly informative as it is. These folks aren't real big on that whole internet thing all the kids are talking about apparently...

Aha. I see. I couldn't get the Googles to find that "site." With an impending opening and several of us watching for our first chance to visit the place, perhaps the thread's name should be changed to reflect "The Shaved Duck."

I peeked in the windows there the other day. It looks ready to go - the tables are set and they've even got the menus stacked up at the little hostess-podium thing. But not actually open. Hopefully soon.

where in the hell is this place? It's clever that their website doesn't even have an address and I'm ready to go!
